Abu Dhabi Refreshes Fishing Regulations for 2026

Abu Dhabi Refreshes Fishing Regulations for 2026

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Following the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi’s regulatory agency has initiated the implementation of two new ministerial decisions for fishing regulations in 2026.

These decisions, released by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in collaboration with this agency, aim to ensure a balance between marine sustainability and food security while providing support to local fishermen.

Ministerial Decision No. (74) abolishes a previous regulation concerning the fishing and sale of specific fish species during their breeding season, facilitating a more flexible regulatory framework informed by the latest data.

Concurrently, Ministerial Decision No. (75) presents a temporary allowance for fishing and trading Longtail Silver Biddy, commonly known as Badah, in the waters of Abu Dhabi for the remainder of 2026.

Officials made it clear that this is a temporary measure, valid only for the 2026 season and subject to regular evaluations based on scientific assessments to maintain sustainable fish stocks.

These decisions are informed by improved indicators of fish stock health within the emirate’s waters, corroborated by scientific research and field data. This initiative is anticipated to enhance fish availability in local markets while simultaneously supporting the fishing workforce.

The regulatory agency will keep a close watch on adherence to all fishing and selling regulations. It urges fishermen and stakeholders to comply with these updated rules and collaborate with authorities to safeguard Abu Dhabi’s marine resources in the long term.
