As digital addiction becomes a larger concern, top social media executives are reflecting on screen time management. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri recently shared his personal strategy for regulating screen use with his children, emphasizing a balanced approach built on responsibility rather than hard restrictions.
While appearing on the podcast It’s Called Soccer, Mosseri indicated that his children’s access to screens is not unrestricted. Video games are enjoyed, but they must first earn screen time through consistency and effort. He believes this philosophy promotes discipline and lessens potential stressors at home.
His children must complete three half-hour homework periods throughout the week. Completing this earns them a cumulative 90 minutes of screen time on weekends. Mosseri finds that this structure fosters a clearer understanding of the relationship between effort and reward.
A significant shift in his parenting approach involved eliminating the use of screen time as a punishment. His earlier methods of confiscating screens only led to increased frustration among his children, prompting him to reassess his tactics.
Instead of penalizing by removal, Mosseri implemented a model where screen time starts at zero, which children can then earn. He contends this method creates a less anxious environment, enabling children to self-regulate while understanding boundaries.
Yet, he acknowledges that certain situations can warrant flexibility in rules. Traveling presents such an occasion, where he humorously noted that typical restrictions may be waived. In those instances, screens serve as a useful means to maintain peace during lengthy journeys.
Mosseri’s parenting philosophy resonates with many modern families. Rather than enforcing outright bans on screens, parents are increasingly focused on guiding their children towards healthy digital habits. The emphasis on structure, emotional awareness, and balance supersedes rigid rules.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that Mosseri, as a leader in a leading social media company, understands the importance of setting boundaries. His outlook exemplifies a middle ground: screens can be beneficial when used appropriately.
As families navigate a digitized world, Mosseri’s straightforward principle shines through: cultivate emotional health, reward dedication, and embrace balance over fear or punitive measures.
