England has officially announced its provisional 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka this February, including the fast bowler Jofra Archer. Although Archer has a left side strain that he picked up during the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, his inclusion demonstrates confidence from the selection committee, under the captaincy of Harry Brook.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on December 30, 2025, that Archer will undergo rehabilitation with the England medical team. Unfortunately, he will miss the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, set to begin on January 22, which consists of three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Archer's injury led to his withdrawal from the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne, which England won comfortably by four wickets over two days. His absence was significant, as he had been a top performer, claiming nine wickets at an average of 27.11 prior to the injury, including a standout 5/53 in Adelaide. He also made his mark with the bat, scoring 102 runs, including a notable half-century.
Although he lacks extensive experience in T20 cricket with only 21 matches played, Archer's selection emphasizes the selectors' belief in his potential. Additionally, uncapped pacer Joshua Tongue has been included in the provisional T20 World Cup squad, showcasing his impressive performances this year, including leading wicket-taker status in this year’s men's Hundred tournament with 14 wickets and 12 wickets at an average of 18.58 in two Ashes Tests.
All-rounder Will Jacks returns to the T20 World Cup squad after injury sidelined him during the New Zealand white-ball tour in October. Brydon Carse has also been selected for both the ODI and T20I series in Sri Lanka, while Zak Crawley finds his way back to the ODI squad after an absence since December 2023.
Notably absent from the T20 World Cup provisional squad and the Sri Lanka tour squads are Jamie Smith, Jordan Cox, and Saqib Mahmood.
England will kick off its T20 World Cup campaign on February 8 in Mumbai against Nepal, followed by matches against the West Indies on February 11, Bangladesh on February 14, and Italy on February 16, all of which will be held in Kolkata.
