Trump Asserts He Resolved India-Pakistan Conflict, India Disagrees

Post by : Meena Hassan

During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago, US President Donald Trump reiterated his claim of having brokering peace in eight conflicts, including the recent India-Pakistan clash. He expressed annoyance for not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his alleged diplomatic efforts.

In a video from the meeting, Trump noted his role in halting the long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan by imposing significant trade tariffs that prompted the nations to seek peace after 35 years of war. He remarked that this swift resolution was even acknowledged by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump went on to assert that he was instrumental in facilitating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan earlier this year, suggesting that his trade concessions were crucial in bringing both sides together. "Do I get credit for it? No. I did eight of them. India. How about India and Pakistan..." he stated during the discussion.

However, India has firmly dismissed any assertions of third-party mediation. The Indian government insists that the ceasefire came about through direct discussions between the two nations' military officials, without external meddling. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also clarified in Parliament that no foreign leader requested India to halt Operation Sindoor, which aimed at disrupting terror infrastructure in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Operation Sindoor commenced on May 7, following a deadly attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. After several days of fierce cross-border exchanges involving drones and missiles, both countries concurred on a ceasefire on May 10.

Despite Trump’s claims—now exceeding 70 instances since May—India’s official position is unequivocal: the peace agreement emerged from direct communication between India's and Pakistan's military leadership, excluding any US involvement.

This ongoing debate underscores the delicate nature of geopolitical relations in South Asia and India's emphasis on managing its own conflicts independently.
