AIIMS Doctor Exposes Harsh Truth: 7 Tea Mistakes That Could Harm Your Gut and Liver

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Tea is a cherished beverage across India, with many individuals kickstarting their days with a steaming cup of chai. While tea can be beneficial, its health properties depend on how it’s consumed. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist now in California, has issued warnings about frequent tea-drinking errors that may be detrimental to both gut and liver health.

In an Instagram post dated November 14, Dr. Sethi outlined seven habits tea lovers should steer clear of. Though tea does come with various health advantages, improper consumption can lead to health issues over time.

1. Sipping Tea on an Empty Stomach

According to Dr. Sethi, commencing your day with tea before eating can irritate your stomach lining, potentially leading to acid reflux, nausea, or discomfort.

2. Excessive Sugar in Tea

Numerous individuals enhance their tea with sugar or indulge in sweetened iced versions. Dr. Sethi pointed out these beverages can pack 30–40 grams of sugar, heightening the risk for fatty liver and diabetes.

3. The Dangers of ‘Detox’ or Slimming Teas

Dr. Sethi cautioned that many detox or slimming teas contain laxatives, which can dehydrate the body, upset mineral balance, and lead to chronic gut damage. He recommends completely avoiding these types of products.

4. Overdoing Green Tea Extracts

While green tea is praised for its health benefits, Dr. Sethi noted that green tea supplements can pose risks, as they have been linked to rare liver issues. He advised sticking to freshly brewed tea instead.

Other Common Mistakes

Despite highlighting seven pitfalls, Dr. Sethi’s core message is straightforward: enjoy tea in moderation. Limit sugar, bypass processed tea products, and avoid drinking tea at inappropriate times. Making these minor adjustments can safeguard your gut and liver health while enhancing your tea experience.
