Eight Critical Warning Signs of Fatty Liver Disease Shared by AIIMS Specialist

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Globally, fatty liver disease is rapidly emerging as a significant health concern, with diagnoses increasing annually. Known medically as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, this condition arises when excessive fat accumulates in the liver. If left untreated, it can lead to severe health issues in the long run.

A recent analysis published in ScienceDirect indicates the alarming escalation of cases. In 1990, approximately 24 million instances of fatty liver were reported, which surged to over 48 million by 2021. Projections suggest this figure could approach 79 million by 2050. Such trends highlight the urgency for individuals to recognize early warning signs and seek medical assistance promptly.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a liver specialist with credentials from AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, recently outlined eight crucial symptoms that may suggest liver dysfunction on his Instagram, underscoring the need for people to be attuned to physical variations. His message was clear: these indicators shouldn’t be overlooked, as early medical visits can profoundly impact health outcomes.

Initially, fatty liver disease often goes unnoticed. Many patients experience no discomfort until the condition deteriorates. Subtle physiological changes warrant serious attention. According to Dr. Sethi, indicators may include pain or discomfort in the abdominal region, increased fatigue despite adequate rest, and swelling in the legs or abdomen, signaling potential fluid retention.

Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, can also be a key warning sign, often indicating the body's failure to properly metabolize fats and sugars. Some may experience a feeling of fullness quickly or loss of appetite, suggesting that liver health is compromised.

Dr. Sethi warns that in advanced stages, yellowing of the skin or eyes, known as jaundice, emerges, necessitating urgent medical evaluation. Cognitive challenges such as difficulty concentrating or confusion may also arise when the liver fails to detoxify the body effectively. These symptoms require immediate attention.

Modern lifestyle choices have been linked to fatty liver disease. Sedentary behavior, poor dietary habits, disrupted sleep patterns, and heightened stress contribute to elevating risks. Overconsumption of sugar, fried foods, and processed snacks gradually increases liver fat accumulation. Notably, obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol levels are primary risk elements.

Addressing the condition early can thwart serious health complications. Simple lifestyle modifications—such as incorporating more fruits and vegetables into meals, engaging in daily walking, drinking sufficient water, and maintaining a healthy weight—can significantly enhance liver health. Steering clear of alcohol and sugary beverages is equally crucial. Routine health screenings and blood tests are vital for early detection.

Dr. Sethi's message is straightforward: be mindful of your body's signals, take early action, and prioritize liver health. With the increasing prevalence of fatty liver disease, awareness of its signs is essential. Early diagnosis and proper management can prevent serious repercussions, enabling maintenance of a strong liver for years to come.
