AIIMS Raipur Specialist Alerts on Risks of Common Antibiotic

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In India, the frequent use of antibiotics is a growing concern, often without medical consultation. Many believe antibiotics will promptly address issues like fever, cough, or minor infections. However, health professionals are increasingly cautioning against this practice. Dr. Parwez Alam, a seasoned urologist at AIIMS Raipur, has issued a notable warning regarding a commonly used antibiotic.

Dr. Alam pointed out that this particular antibiotic might trigger severe side effects if not administered carefully. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a Black Box Warning for this medication, which denotes the harshest level of warning regarding medicinal safety. It signifies that the drug could have serious side effects and must be utilized with extreme caution.

The antibiotic has been linked to damage to tendons, the critical tissues binding muscles to bones. Such damage can result in significant pain, weakness, and impair normal movement, potentially leading to lasting effects. Furthermore, Dr. Alam noted that some individuals have developed uncontrolled diabetes after using this drug, complicating their ability to manage blood sugar levels.

Moreover, Dr. Alam highlighted possible nerve-related complications, which may manifest as numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in extremities. These nerve impacts can disrupt daily activities and sometimes heal inadequately.

Compounding the issue, this antibiotic remains readily prescribed and sold in numerous pharmacies, with many acquiring it over-the-counter under the misconception of its safety. Dr. Alam firmly advised against using such medications without a doctor's guidance, particularly cautioning parents against administering it to children or teens due to potential risks to their developing bodies.

Global health experts express concern that excessive antibiotic use fosters bacterial resistance. This evolving resistance could render standard treatments for common infections increasingly challenging.

Dr. Alam’s guidance is straightforward:

  • Consult a doctor before taking antibiotics.

  • Do not pressure medical professionals to prescribe antibiotics when not warranted.

  • Complete the prescribed medication course only if instructed.

  • Avoid self-medication altogether.

This advisory is crucial for public awareness. While medications can be lifesaving, their efficacy hinges on responsible use. Exercising caution today may safeguard your health for tomorrow.
