Surgeon from AIIMS Warns Excessive Winter Caffeine Can Harm Joints

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

As the winter chill sets in, many turn to hot beverages like tea and coffee for warmth and comfort. However, Dr. Dushyant Chouhan, an orthopedic surgeon at AIIMS Raipur, cautions that excessive consumption of these drinks can negatively impact joint health. In a recent advisory released on November 17, he highlighted that too many hot beverages may cause dehydration, which can harm bones and joints.

According to Dr. Chouhan, the knee joint has a protective cartilage layer that requires adequate moisture to function effectively. When the body becomes dehydrated, this cartilage may dry out, leading to bone friction, stiffness, and pain. He noted that during winter, people often increase their intake of tea and coffee to stay warm, neglecting their water consumption. The colder weather often reduces thirst perception, allowing dehydration to escalate unnoticed, exacerbating joint discomfort.

Dr. Chouhan clarified that it's not the consumption of tea and coffee itself that's harmful; rather, it becomes an issue when these beverages are not paired with sufficient water intake. He stressed the significance of maintaining hydration levels, even during winter months, to ensure joints remain healthy and well-lubricated. Many people overlook the impact of their beverage choices on joint wellbeing, but small adjustments, like drinking more water, can lead to significant benefits.

Dr. Chouhan noted that numerous individuals found this advice valuable and have been sharing it widely post his announcement. He aims to raise awareness about the need for hydration throughout the winter to help people better care for their joints.

In summary, while tea and coffee serve as comforting winter staples, excessive consumption without adequate hydration can deplete cartilage and lead to joint issues. Regular water intake, a balanced diet, and staying active are crucial for joint health and overall comfort in winter.
