Ajou Ajou Released by Saskatchewan Roughriders Following CFL Inquiry

Post by : Shweta

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have parted ways with wide receiver Ajou Ajou after the Canadian Football League's investigation revealed misconduct concerning allegations made against him. The investigation found that Ajou was involved in “aggressive and unwelcome physical contact” with a number of women at a Regina restaurant on November 18, 2025—the day of the team’s Grey Cup victory.

The CFL reported that these allegations emerged in late January, prompting a thorough third-party investigation, which included discussions with Ajou, witnesses, and those who made the complaints. Following a detailed review, the league found Ajou in violation of its policy on gender-based violence and harassment.

As a disciplinary measure, the CFL has handed down a suspension to Ajou for the entirety of the 2026 preseason along with at least six regular-season games. The league also set forth stringent conditions for potential reinstatement, which include completing 15 mandatory counseling sessions with a gender violence expert, a psychological assessment, and a formal meeting with Commissioner Stewart Johnston. Any failure to meet these standards could result in additional penalties.

The Roughriders' management reacted strongly, asserting that Ajou’s behavior deviated from the team's core principles. General Manager Jeremy O'Day stated that the team upholds significant standards surrounding respect, integrity, and personal conduct, emphasizing that the allegations were immediately reported to league authorities once brought to their attention.

O'Day acknowledged the context of the incident, noting it occurred during the team's Grey Cup celebrations. However, he firmly maintained that such circumstances do not justify inappropriate conduct, labeling the situation as disappointing and reaffirming the organization’s commitment to fostering a respectful and safe environment for all.

Despite the potential for future reinstatement by the CFL, O’Day made it explicitly clear that Ajou Ajou will not be welcomed back into the Roughriders, describing their conversation as challenging but necessary in light of the serious findings.

The CFL has reiterated its support for those impacted by such issues, including providing access to experienced counselors, support services, and safety planning resources. Meanwhile, local law enforcement in Regina confirmed no formal complaints have been filed regarding the incident.

This episode underscores the league's unwavering stance on player conduct and reinforces its mission to foster accountability and respect within the sport.
