Al Ahli Qatar Beat Khalidiya 2-1 in AFC Champions League

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Qatar’s Al Ahli registered their first win in the AFC Champions League 2 group stage after defeating Bahrain’s Khalidiya 2-1 in a thrilling encounter. The match was held on Wednesday at the Muharraq Stadium in Manama, the capital of Bahrain. This crucial victory lifted Al Ahli to the top of Group B with six points, breaking their streak of three consecutive draws in the tournament.

The game remained tightly contested in the first half, with both sides displaying strong defensive organization. However, it was in the second half that the match came to life. Al Ahli broke the deadlock in the 65th minute through Idriss Fettouhi, who converted a fine opportunity after a well-built team move. Khalidiya responded strongly and managed to equalize in the 74th minute when Mohammed Al Rumaihi found the back of the net, capitalizing on a rare goalkeeping mistake by Marwan Sharif.

As the game seemed to be heading toward another draw, Al Ahli showed remarkable determination. In stoppage time, substitute Omar Sekou delivered the decisive moment with a precise finish that sealed the win for the Qatari side. His late strike not only earned Al Ahli all three points but also revived their hopes of advancing further in the tournament. The goal reflected the team’s resilience and fighting spirit under pressure.

Throughout the match, Al Ahli displayed a balanced performance, combining disciplined defending with creative attacking play. The midfielders effectively controlled possession, while the forwards kept Khalidiya’s defense on edge. Despite the temporary setback after the equalizer, the players maintained composure and continued to push forward until the final whistle. Coach Nebojsa Jovovic praised his team’s efforts, highlighting their mental toughness and tactical discipline.

With this victory, Al Ahli climbed to the top of Group B with six points, overtaking Khalidiya, who remained on five points. The win significantly boosts Al Ahli’s chances of qualifying for the knockout stage. The group remains competitive, as other teams like Andijon of Uzbekistan and Arkadag of Turkmenistan are still within reach of the qualification spots.

Before this win, Al Ahli had drawn their first three matches. They opened their campaign with a draw against Khalidiya in Doha, followed by another away draw with Andijon. Their previous fixture against Arkadag also ended level, leaving them desperate for a win to stay in contention. The latest result ends their winless run and builds momentum as the group stage enters its final rounds.

Al Ahli will play their next match away against Arkadag on November 5. This fixture will be another crucial test, as both teams aim to strengthen their positions in the group standings. After that, Al Ahli will conclude their group-stage campaign at home in Doha against Andijon on December 24. Securing positive results in these remaining matches could ensure their progression to the next round of the competition.

The morale within the Al Ahli squad is high after this much-needed victory. Players and fans alike expressed confidence that the team can continue their strong form and compete effectively against the remaining opponents. The win also reinforces Al Ahli’s reputation as one of Qatar’s most consistent clubs on the continental stage, demonstrating their growing ambition to make a mark in Asia’s secondary club competition.

Al Ahli’s 2-1 win over Khalidiya marks a turning point in their AFC Champions League 2 campaign. With renewed belief, disciplined teamwork, and tactical sharpness, the Qatari side now stands at the top of Group B. Their focus will now shift to maintaining this momentum in their upcoming fixtures, as they aim to qualify for the knockout stages and continue representing Qatari football with pride and determination.
