Abu Dhabi ALC Starts Global Arabic Translation Initiative

Abu Dhabi ALC Starts Global Arabic Translation Initiative

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) has launched a major new initiative titled ‘From Kalima to the World’ to bring Emirati and Arab literary works to global audiences. The announcement was made during the ALC’s participation in the 77th edition of the Frankfurter Buchmesse, held in Frankfurt, Germany, from 15 to 19 October. The initiative aims to translate outstanding Arabic literary and intellectual works into major world languages, introducing the richness of Arab culture to international readers.

This new project builds upon the legacy of the Kalima Translation Project, which was launched in 2007. Over the past two decades, Kalima has enriched the Arabic library with more than 1,400 translated titles from various global languages. Through ‘From Kalima to the World’, the ALC now seeks to reverse this direction by translating high-quality Arabic works into English, French, Spanish, and other global languages. The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to promoting cultural exchange and sharing Arab creativity with the rest of the world.

Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, said that the initiative was launched at the Frankfurter Buchmesse to ensure a strong global presence and visibility. He explained that the project aims to create lasting bridges of cultural dialogue and mutual understanding among different civilizations. Dr. Tamim emphasized that translation is not only about language but also about sharing values, ideas, and perspectives that shape global awareness. He noted that the initiative focuses on translating both classical and modern masterpieces, representing the creative diversity of Arabic thought and literature.

Dr. Tamim further explained that the initiative places great importance on the quality and authenticity of translations. Each selected book will be translated by experts who understand both the linguistic and cultural nuances of Arabic literature. The goal is to ensure that each work reflects the true spirit and beauty of its original form. By maintaining high translation standards, the project seeks to present a realistic and diverse image of the Arab world, highlighting its intellectual richness and cultural depth.

Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Executive Director of the Arabic Language Centre, expressed pride in continuing the Kalima project’s pioneering work in translation. He said that the ‘From Kalima to the World’ initiative is a natural extension of ALC’s efforts to enhance the presence of the Arabic language globally. According to him, translating Arabic works into international languages will allow the world to discover the creative achievements of Arab writers and thinkers. It will also open new opportunities for international publishing and cultural cooperation.

Al Tunaiji added that this initiative will serve as a cultural bridge between the Arab world and other nations. By presenting authentic Arabic voices to global readers, it promotes greater understanding and appreciation of Arab heritage and modern creativity. The project aims to introduce global audiences to the aesthetic richness of Arabic literature and its unique perspectives on humanity, identity, and culture. It will also encourage publishers, authors, and translators to collaborate in bringing these valuable works to new readers worldwide.

The ‘From Kalima to the World’ project represents a strategic step in enhancing Abu Dhabi’s role as a global hub for cultural dialogue and literary exchange. It supports the ALC’s mission to celebrate the Arabic language as a living, evolving language that continues to inspire thought and creativity. By expanding the reach of Arabic literature, the initiative contributes to strengthening cross-cultural relations and promoting global peace through knowledge, understanding, and respect.
