UAE Uses AI to Grow Arabic Language and Culture Worldwide

Post by : Mumtaaz Qadiri

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is using artificial intelligence, or AI, to help the Arabic language grow and develop in the digital world. AI is a type of technology that can learn and do tasks like humans. The UAE wants Arabic to become stronger and more popular not only in the Middle East but also around the world. They are using AI to make sure Arabic language and its culture can meet the needs of the future, especially as more people use digital tools and the internet.

AI Is Helping Many Important Fields

In the UAE, many government and cultural organizations are starting projects using AI. These projects help different fields like publishing books, education, creating dictionaries, and producing creative content. By using AI, these groups want to keep Arabic alive and growing, making it easier for people to read, write, learn, and enjoy the language in the digital age.

The Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language

One very important project is the Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language. This big project was completed last year in Sharjah, a city known as the "Capital of Arab Culture." The dictionary is a large and detailed book that shows how Arabic words have changed and developed over many years and centuries. It helps people understand the history of Arabic words and how the language has grown with time. This dictionary is a great scientific achievement and shows the value the UAE places on Arabic language and heritage.

The GPT Historical Dictionary with AI Technology

After the historical dictionary was finished, another exciting project began. It is called the “GPT Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language.” This dictionary uses AI technology to make Arabic language information easier to share and use around the world. It has over 20 million Arabic words, which is a huge number. People who study Arabic or just love the language can use this dictionary to read and write texts. They can even turn these texts into videos. The dictionary is updated all the time with new words and information. This work is done by a team from the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah and the Emirates Scholar Research Centre working together.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation and Digital Knowledge Hub

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation is another important group in the UAE that helps spread Arabic knowledge and digital culture. They created a website called the “Digital Knowledge Hub.” This platform collects and organizes a large amount of digital Arabic content, like books and documents. Last year, this hub had more than 800,000 book titles and 8.5 million digital items. These digital items are kept in more than 18 different libraries that focus on special topics. This hub makes it easier for people to find Arabic knowledge online.

Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre and AI-Based Publishing

The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre is part of the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi. This centre has started several AI projects to help publish Arabic content. One of their important projects is a special digital dictionary that supports Arabic language content on the internet. This dictionary is the first Arabic-English dictionary that uses AI and computer science to improve how words are understood. It covers over 7,000 important modern Arabic words. The dictionary can automatically say the word aloud, give easy meanings, provide examples, show pictures, and explain the grammar and meaning of each word clearly. This helps people learn Arabic better and faster.

Balanced Arabic Readability Corpus (BAREC) Project

The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre worked with teams from New York University Abu Dhabi and Zayed University on a project called the Balanced Arabic Readability Corpus, or BAREC. This project aims to collect a very large set of Arabic words—about 10 million words—from many different kinds of books, writings, and topics. This collection will help researchers better understand Arabic and create better language tools. It also helps improve the quality of Arabic content online.

Digital Square Initiative at Abu Dhabi International Book Fair

At the most recent Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, a new project called "Digital Square" was introduced. Digital Square is a special space designed to help people use AI in publishing books and other written materials. It provides writers, publishers, and readers with new ways to improve how Arabic books are made and shared. This initiative encourages the use of the latest technology to support the Arabic publishing industry.

Educational Institutions Using AI for Arabic Teaching

Many schools, colleges, and universities in the UAE are interested in using AI and modern technology to teach Arabic. They are creating different programs and tools to help students learn Arabic in a more fun and easy way. AI can help students practice reading, writing, and speaking Arabic with interactive lessons and personalized support. These new methods can make Arabic education better and more accessible for everyone.

The Importance of AI for Arabic Language and Culture

The UAE’s efforts show how AI can help protect and grow the Arabic language and its rich culture. Arabic is one of the oldest languages in the world and has great importance for many people. By using AI, the UAE is making sure that Arabic stays modern and useful in the future. These projects also help Arabic connect with new generations who use digital tools every day.

Collaboration with Local and Global Partners

Many of the AI projects in the UAE are done with help from universities and research centres both inside the country and internationally. For example, the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah works with the Emirates Scholar Research Centre. Abu Dhabi’s Arabic Language Centre cooperates with New York University Abu Dhabi and Zayed University. These partnerships bring knowledge and technology together to make Arabic language tools stronger and better.

Future of Arabic Language in the Digital World

The UAE is leading the way in using AI to support the Arabic language. Their projects show how technology can be used to keep a language alive and growing, even in a fast-changing world. The future looks bright for Arabic because of these efforts. Arabic language learners, teachers, researchers, and readers all benefit from the new AI tools and digital content. The UAE is creating a model for other countries to follow when it comes to combining culture, language, and technology.

UAE’s Role as a Leader in Arabic AI Projects

The UAE has done a lot to use AI for the Arabic language and culture. Their many projects, such as historical dictionaries, digital knowledge hubs, AI-based dictionaries, and education programs, show a strong commitment to the future of Arabic. This work helps Arabic remain a strong and vibrant language globally. It also helps people everywhere connect with Arabic culture and history through new digital ways.
