Alibaba has officially launched its new Quark AI glasses in China, marking a significant move into the AI wearables market. The launch shows Alibaba’s ambition to compete globally in a field largely dominated by companies like Meta. Unlike traditional VR headsets, the Quark glasses look like regular eyewear, featuring a black plastic frame and a sleek design.

The glasses are priced starting at 1,899 yuan (about $268.25), making them accessible for a wide range of consumers. They are powered by Alibaba’s Qwen AI model and app, which allows the glasses to perform multiple smart functions while maintaining a stylish, everyday appearance.

One of the main strengths of the Quark glasses is their deep integration with Alibaba’s digital ecosystem. Users can link the device with Alipay, Alibaba’s payment app, or Taobao, the company’s shopping platform. This integration enables practical features such as on-the-go translation, instant price recognition in stores, and other interactive experiences, blending convenience with AI technology.

Alibaba has historically lagged behind its competitors in AI-powered consumer devices. However, the launch of Quark glasses comes after the company recently upgraded its AI chatbot, showing a clear and aggressive strategy to enter the AI consumer space. The glasses are part of a larger trend where tech giants are seeking new forms of devices for entertainment, work, and daily computing, all supported by AI technology.

The AI glasses market is highly competitive. Meta dominates the VR headset industry with nearly 80% market share. Apple has released its Vision Pro headset, while Samsung introduced its Galaxy XR headset in October, using AI features from Google. Other Chinese companies are also expanding their AI glasses offerings. Xiaomi launched its version in June, and Baidu already has AI glasses available for sale.

The Quark glasses represent a shift toward lighter, more practical wearable devices that blend into daily life while offering AI-powered features. They provide users with tools for both work and leisure, from language translation to shopping assistance. This aligns with Alibaba’s goal of expanding its AI ecosystem and making everyday technology more interactive and useful for consumers.

By launching Quark glasses, Alibaba demonstrates a strong commitment to innovation and competing with global tech leaders. The company is focusing on combining AI with wearable technology to deliver convenience, entertainment, and utility in one device.
