The Governorate of AlUla in Saudi Arabia celebrated the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on October 17, a day recognized by UNESCO to honor living heritage that shapes cultural identity and traditions worldwide.
The celebration highlights AlUla’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage and supporting its local community in passing knowledge and stories to future generations. This effort strengthens culture as a key part of national development and contributes to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
AlUla is home to diverse cultural traditions, especially in performing arts such as Al-Ardah, Al-Zir, and Al-Dahha, alongside traditional poetry and storytelling. Social customs, including marriage ceremonies, continue to reflect the heritage passed down through generations.
Traditional hospitality is symbolized by coffee, gathering spaces, and mud houses, while craftsmanship shines in mud construction, pottery, engraving, and carving. Al-Sadu weaving is a prominent handicraft, creating intricate geometric patterns that reflect desert life and cultural identity.
Local foods, ancient irrigation methods, and the life of oases also form an important part of AlUla’s living heritage. Palm trees play a central role, providing food, livelihoods, and traditional products, while camel chanting reflects AlUla’s deep connection to camel breeding and care.
AlUla is also known for Arabic calligraphy, with diverse styles, inscriptions, and artistic expressions that showcase the region’s cultural identity.
AlUla will host the Ancient Kingdoms Festival from November 20 to December 6, followed by the Winter at Tantora Festival from December 18 to January 10, 2026. These events aim to strengthen AlUla’s cultural and tourism presence both locally and internationally.
Through these initiatives, AlUla continues to celebrate and preserve its intangible heritage, combining history, culture, and community involvement to create a sustainable cultural legacy. The celebrations also highlight the Kingdom’s dedication to promoting Saudi culture globally, while engaging visitors with the unique traditions, arts, and lifestyle of AlUla.
By showcasing traditional arts, crafts, foods, and social customs, AlUla is helping ensure that its living heritage remains vibrant, inspiring new generations and maintaining its significance in the modern world.
