Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that the government will prioritize education and healthcare in Malaysia, despite challenges posed by the current global energy crisis.
During a meet-and-greet with students and alumni in Kuala Kangsar on April 4, he emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining high standards in education and public services. Smaller projects in schools and healthcare will be expedited, while larger initiatives might require more time to implement.
This commitment arrives as Malaysia, akin to many other nations, deals with escalating fuel prices and economic instability triggered by international conflicts, especially in the Middle East. These geopolitical tensions have led to supply chain disruptions and increased global energy costs, significantly impacting local economies.
Anwar pointed out that many countries are redirecting finances toward security due to geopolitical strife, often compromising education funding. He cautioned that neglecting education could have detrimental effects on future generations.
In response to the crisis, the Malaysian government has implemented various measures, such as working collaboratively with state leaders to ensure energy supply security and shield citizens from price surges. The focus is on controlling inflation, ensuring fuel availability, and protecting public welfare through targeted assistance programs.
Additionally, the government recently introduced work-from-home protocols for public sector employees starting mid-April to diminish national energy usage and relieve pressure on resources.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Anwar voiced confidence in Malaysia's resilience, noting that government policies are data-driven and aim to balance economic stability with public well-being.
He reaffirmed that continued investment in education and healthcare is crucial for sustainable national development amid global uncertainties.
