Dutch Authorities Approve Tesla's FSD for European Roads

Dutch Authorities Approve Tesla's FSD for European Roads

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Amsterdam: In a significant development for autonomous vehicles, Dutch authorities have granted approval for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised software, permitting its operation on highways and urban streets under human oversight.

The Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) granted this approval following over 18 months of thorough examinations. This approval signals the first occasion Tesla’s advanced driving assistance system is allowed in Europe, with the potential for broader use across EU nations.

With FSD Supervised, vehicles can autonomously handle steering, braking, and acceleration, although it's essential for drivers to stay alert and prepared to intervene. RDW suggests that correct system usage can enhance road safety.

Tesla is targeting EU-wide endorsement next. The Dutch agency has filed a request with the European Commission, where member countries will deliberate on the technology's acceptance throughout the bloc. Even if EU-wide authorization takes time, individual nations might approve the system independently.

This development is vital for Tesla as it pivots towards AI-driven driving technology and prospective robotaxi services, which are essential for future earnings. A substantial portion of Tesla’s future valuation hinges on this vision.

In Europe, Tesla has encountered declining sales amid a dated electric vehicle lineup and controversies regarding CEO Elon Musk’s political statements. However, a surge in sales was reported in February, and analysts anticipate that FSD's approval could further elevate demand shortly.

Currently, about 100,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the Netherlands can receive updates for the FSD software. Tesla has announced that the rollout will start soon.

Unlike similar ‘hands-free’ systems from manufacturers like Mercedes, BMW, and Ford, which are confined to specific highways and conditions, Tesla’s FSD aims to operate in a wider variety of real-world situations. It notably relies on a combination of cameras and AI, contrasting with competitors that utilize multiple sensors.

However, the EU version of the FSD system will be adapted to meet stricter safety regulations than in the U.S., where it has faced legal challenges linked to accidents and traffic violations.

With regulatory progress underway, Tesla is optimistic about attaining EU-wide permission as early as this summer, potentially transforming the landscape of autonomous driving across Europe.
