Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, met with two major international figures during his official visit to Cairo. He held separate meetings with Rolando Miguel González Patricio, President of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), and Dr. AbdulHakim Elwaer, Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The meetings aimed to strengthen cooperation on global parliamentary issues and enhance joint action on food security and humanitarian recovery.
In his meeting with González Patricio, Al Yamahi discussed the importance of joint institutional efforts to support the people of Palestine, especially in Gaza. Both leaders emphasized their shared commitment to peace and reconstruction. The discussions also focused on supporting the upcoming International Conference for Early Recovery and Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which is scheduled to take place in Egypt in November.
Al Yamahi stressed that Arab and Latin American countries share strong values of solidarity and justice. He highlighted that the Arab Parliament appreciates Latin America’s consistent positions in support of Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian struggle for their rights and the consolidation of a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
He also underlined that continued cooperation between the Arab Parliament and Parlatino would help develop stronger diplomatic bridges between the two regions, supporting peace, stability, and sustainable recovery in conflict-affected areas.
The meeting between Al Yamahi and González Patricio reaffirmed the deep friendship between the Arab world and the Latin American region. Both leaders agreed to explore joint parliamentary initiatives, including inter-regional visits, policy exchanges, and awareness programs focused on humanitarian and development priorities.
Al Yamahi explained that such cooperation would give both parliaments a stronger voice on the global stage and encourage balanced international dialogue. He emphasized the importance of coordination in addressing global challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and displacement caused by conflicts.
The two sides agreed to maintain regular communication and to hold follow-up meetings aimed at preparing a joint action plan for the year ahead. The plan will focus on the promotion of parliamentary diplomacy, peace advocacy, and the protection of human rights.
In a separate meeting with Dr. AbdulHakim Elwaer, Assistant Director-General of the FAO, Al Yamahi discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the Arab Parliament and the FAO. The discussion centered on signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance legislative efforts on food security in Arab countries.
Al Yamahi said the Arab Parliament recognizes that food security is one of the most critical challenges facing the Arab world today. He assured that the Parliament is ready to support FAO-led programs and to promote regional laws that encourage sustainable agricultural practices, reduce food waste, and ensure fair access to nutrition for all citizens.
He also commended FAO’s continuous work in the region, particularly its initiatives on sustainable agriculture, resource management, and climate adaptation. Both sides agreed that parliamentary involvement can help governments design stronger and more coordinated policies for food sustainability.
The Speaker of the Arab Parliament also praised FAO’s parliamentary summits, which provide a platform for lawmakers from around the world to exchange experiences and solutions related to agriculture and nutrition. Al Yamahi confirmed that the Arab Parliament will participate actively in the next FAO Parliamentary Summit to be held in South Africa in 2026.
He stated that such international gatherings help lawmakers stay informed about the best legislative models and promote dialogue on critical issues like hunger reduction and food system resilience. The Arab Parliament plans to use these opportunities to advocate for policies that protect food resources and promote fair trade in agricultural goods.
Al Yamahi concluded his Cairo meetings by reaffirming that the Arab Parliament will continue to expand its international partnerships to address shared challenges. He said that cooperation with institutions like Parlatino and the FAO reflects the Arab Parliament’s commitment to global dialogue, sustainable development, and humanitarian solidarity.
Through these collaborations, the Arab Parliament hopes to play a greater role in promoting peace, food security, and social progress across the Arab world and beyond. Al Yamahi’s meetings marked another step in strengthening the Parliament’s diplomatic outreach and its contribution to global cooperation and mutual understanding.
