6 Essential Tips from a Ghaziabad Pulmonologist for Asthmatics Facing Pollution

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

As the air quality in Delhi and its adjoining areas continues to decline, those with respiratory issues, particularly asthma, become increasingly affected. The hazardous smog poses a grave threat not only to general health but also exacerbates pre-existing lung conditions. Dr. Kamal Kishore Pandey, an experienced pulmonologist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, elaborates on the health dangers posed by poor air quality and provides actionable advice for asthmatics to safeguard their health.

The Dangers of Smog and Pollution

Dr. Pandey stresses that air pollution is a significant public health issue. “Smog and airborne contaminants can lead to serious health complications including lung cancer, asthma attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory issues, and cardiovascular diseases,” he explains. Pollutants can irritate the airways and cause inflammation in the lungs, resulting in symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pressure.

Asthmatics and those with COPD are under heightened risk due to their hypersensitive airways. According to the World Health Organization, fine particulate matter contributes to approximately seven million deaths globally each year. In pollution-heavy areas like Delhi, individuals with chronic respiratory conditions can experience severe symptoms that may necessitate hospitalization.

Impact of Pollution on Asthmatic Individuals

Dr. Pandey emphasizes that while air pollution does not directly induce asthma, it amplifies existing symptoms for those already diagnosed. Harmful pollutants can inflame and constrict the airways, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and chest discomfort. Other irritations may also affect the eyes and throat, complicating daily routines for people with asthma.

Six Strategies for Asthmatics to Stay Safe

To mitigate the effects of air pollution, Dr. Pandey advises asthmatics to adopt these six key strategies:

  • Create an Asthma Emergency Action Plan – Work with your physician on a plan for worsening symptoms.
  • Adapt Your Strategy to Your Lifestyle – Make sure that your action plan aligns with your work and environment.
  • Minimize Outdoor Activity – Stay indoors on days with poor air quality; check air quality indices before going outside.
  • Utilize Protective Masks – Masks can filter out pollutants and germs. Regularly replace disposable masks and clean reusable ones.
  • Maintain Hydration – High pollution levels can lead to dehydration, making it crucial to drink sufficient fluids and alleviate headaches and nausea.
  • Boost Immunity Through Nutrition – Eat foods rich in vitamin C, magnesium, and omega-3s, such as leafy greens, ginger, garlic, yogurt, and eggs to support your immune health and minimize flare-ups.

Awareness is Key

Dr. Pandey insists that asthmatics must take proactive steps, especially during periods of high pollution. Implementing these straightforward yet effective recommendations can significantly lessen the adverse health effects of smog, allowing individuals to manage their health better and continue to participate in daily activities.
