Australia has successfully repatriated a new group of women and children from Syria, suspected of having connections to the ISIL militant group. This group consisted of six women and thirteen children, who arrived in Sydney and Melbourne on Tuesday, all under strict security surveillance.
The Australian government clarified that it did not play a direct role in the repatriation process but advised that any individuals identified as participants in criminal or terrorist activities would face legal repercussions. The investigations concerning the repatriates remain active.
Since around 2012, Australian women have been traveling to Syria, often marrying individuals associated with ISIL. While some reportedly went voluntarily, others may have been coerced amid the conflict.
The arrival of these families has ignited discussions and raised security anxieties within Australia. Reports indicated significant police presence at Melbourne Airport, where tensions flared briefly during the escorting of the returnees through a restricted area.
Australian Federal Police confirmed that no immediate arrests were executed upon their arrival, but intelligence and security agencies continue to evaluate the women's backgrounds and monitor potential threats linked to extremist activities.
Globally, the repatriation of citizens associated with ISIL remains a contentious issue. Countries like the United Kingdom and France have faced backlash for their reluctance to allow the return of citizens stranded in Syrian camps.
Security analysts emphasize the importance of addressing the threats posed by returnees with care. Many involved, especially children, may require long-term rehabilitation, psychological assistance, and support for reintegration into society following their experiences in conflict zones.
Earlier this month, a different set of Australian women and children returned from Syria, leading to the arrest of three women shortly after their arrival. This recent operation underscores Australia's ongoing struggle to balance national security with humanitarian obligations.
