In a recent meeting held at Government House in Bangkok on May 14, 2026, Thailand and Australia pledged to deepen their bilateral relations by enhancing collaboration across various sectors, including security, economic growth, digital governance, and combatting transnational crime. The discussions took place between Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan and Angela Macdonald, the Australian Ambassador to Thailand.
Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn expressed gratitude to Ambassador Macdonald for her commitment to fortifying the ties between Thailand and Australia during her diplomatic service. The ambassador reciprocated by commending the enduring partnership built on military collaboration, cultural exchanges, and connections among the people.
A focal point of the discussions was Thailand’s ambition to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with the Thai government targeting 2028 for membership completion. Pakorn expressed appreciation for Australia’s ongoing support through the Mekong-Australia Partnership, aimed at advancing governance, technology, and institutional standards.
Ambassador Macdonald also acknowledged Thailand's innovative use of technology to enhance public administration and services. The meeting underscored the significance of digital innovation in aligning Thailand with global governance and economic benchmarks, while Pakorn, a student of Australia, valued the continued scholarship assistance provided under the partnership programme.
Another pressing issue addressed was the escalating threat of transnational crime, particularly cybercrime and online fraud that impact both nations. Both parties agreed on the importance of intensified collaboration in intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination, and community awareness initiatives to combat these challenges more effectively. Thai officials emphasized the necessity for improving digital literacy among the populace to mitigate online scam risks.
The meeting also reviewed progress made under the Joint Plan of Action for the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership for the duration of 2022 to 2025. Officials noted advances in economic collaboration, regional security, education, and enhancing interpersonal relations. Both countries expressed eagerness to further expand cooperation in various beneficial areas.
In closing, Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn extended his best wishes to Ambassador Angela Macdonald as she nears the end of her diplomatic tenure. Both representatives reaffirmed their shared determination to maintain close cooperation and fortify strategic ties between Australia and Thailand in the forthcoming years.
