Bahrain Advocates for Peace and UN Overhaul During Security Council Session

Post by : Bianca Haleem

During a significant session of the United Nations Security Council in New York, Bahrain contributed to discussions centered on upholding the UN Charter and fostering global peace.

The meeting was presided over by Wang Yi and included various members of the Security Council, along with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several state leaders.

Bahrain’s delegation, led by Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, reiterated its commitment to the UN Charter, emphasizing the importance of state sovereignty, non-interference, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

He raised concerns about various global challenges, including armed conflicts, terrorism, and humanitarian crises, alongside emerging threats like climate change and health risks. He pointed out that the Security Council faces mounting pressure and must enhance global collaboration.

Dr. Al Zayani called attention to the plight of the Palestinian people, advocating for international support towards a two-state solution and the full UN membership of Palestine.

He supported global initiatives surrounding Gaza aimed at ceasing hostilities, rebuilding efforts, and advancing a political dialogue for enduring peace.

The minister expressed concern over the adverse effects of conflicts on civilians, particularly women and children, stressing that global crises are exacerbating food insecurity and displacing populations.

On regional security matters, he highlighted the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that interruptions in maritime routes could hinder global trade and essential supplies. He called for safeguarding international shipping in accordance with international law.

Dr. Al Zayani urged Iran to fulfill its international obligations and adhere to good-neighborly principles, calling for the cessation of its support for armed entities and destabilizing actions.

He acknowledged the ongoing diplomatic engagements between the United States and Iran, facilitated by regional actors, expressing hope for sustained progress towards peace.

Recognizing the importance of addressing conflicts in Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, he asserted that regional stability is pivotal for maintaining peace.

He reiterated that the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is vital for global trade and must be upheld by international agreements.

Bahrain outlined its expanding role on the international stage, including its imminent presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council and active involvement in the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Dr. Al Zayani also pointed out Bahrain’s anticipated term on the Security Council from 2026 to 2027, focusing on promoting cooperation in various areas including women, peace, and security, youth involvement, and digital evolution.

He highlighted the responsible use of technology and artificial intelligence to bridge the digital gap and combat extremism.

In concluding remarks, Dr. Al Zayani called for a thorough reform of the United Nations Security Council to enhance its relevance and effectiveness, reaffirming that a robust UN Charter is essential to global peace.
