Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by four wickets in the first T20I at Sharjah, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Despite a late fightback by Afghanistan, timely batting from Nurul Hasan and Rishad Hossain secured the win for Bangladesh in 18.4 overs.
Steady Start for Bangladesh
Chasing 152, Bangladesh began cautiously, scoring just 14 runs in the first three overs. Openers Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Parvez Hossain Emon then accelerated, scoring 50 runs in the powerplay with boundaries and smart running, putting Bangladesh in a strong position early in the innings.
Strong Partnership Between Openers
After the powerplay, Tanzid Hasan continued to attack, hitting sixes off both Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad. The openers added more boundaries and reached personal fifties, sharing a century partnership before Fareed Ahmad finally broke through, giving Afghanistan hope.
Rashid Khan Sparks Comeback
Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan nearly turned the match around with an exceptional four-wicket haul. He dismissed Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan in the same over and picked two more wickets in his final spell. Bangladesh went from 109/0 to 118/6 in a dramatic collapse, giving Afghanistan a chance to win.
Crucial Contributions from Rishad and Nurul
With victory seemingly slipping away, Rishad Hossain and Nurul Hasan stabilized the innings. Nurul’s back-to-back sixes in the final overs sealed Bangladesh’s four-wicket win, completing the chase in 18.4 overs and denying Afghanistan a remarkable comeback.
Afghanistan’s Batting Challenges
Earlier, Afghanistan posted 151/9 in 20 overs. Despite a strong start from Ibrahim Zadran and a solid 40 from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, regular wickets kept falling. Mohammad Nabi’s late cameo, including three sixes, and a quick contribution from Sharafuddin Ashraf helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total, though it proved slightly below par.
Key Scores and Highlights
Afghanistan scored 151/9, with Gurbaz making 40 and Nabi 38. Rashid Khan took 4/18 for Bangladesh. In reply, Bangladesh reached 153/6 in 18.4 overs, with Parvez Hossain Emon scoring 54 and Tanzid Hasan Tamim 51. Bangladesh won the match by 4 wickets.
With this victory, Bangladesh leads the T20I series 1-0. Afghanistan will aim to bounce back in the second T20I, hoping to overcome their near-comeback and level the series in Sharjah.a
