Bengaluru Nutritionist Offers Practical Advice for Late-Night Dinners

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Due to demanding jobs and long commutes, many find themselves having dinner later than ideal. Although this habit can pose health risks, nutritionist Anupama Menon from Bengaluru offers straightforward strategies to mitigate the effects of late-night dining. Her insights were shared in a recent Instagram post titled “Late shift? Here is how to fix the damage.”

The first key takeaway is establishing a sufficient fasting window. Anupama recommends individuals should track when they finish their evening meal and refrain from eating for a minimum of 12 hours before their next meal. This practice aids digestion and provides necessary rest to the digestive system. For instance, if dinner concludes at 10 pm, the following meal should ideally occur around 10 am. Women over 40 and those dealing with stress should aim for a fasting window of 12 to 12.5 hours, while others may extend it to 14 hours, but not any longer.

Another essential guideline is to consume dinner at least two hours before bedtime, facilitating better digestion and promoting restful sleep. If dinner is at 9 pm, aim to be in bed by 11 pm. However, recognizing that work commitments can disrupt meal timings, Anupama advises having a balanced meal during work hours, followed by a light snack—like soup or a small salad—when arriving home late. This approach helps prevent discomfort from overeating or going to bed hungry.

For night shift workers, she has tailored strategies as well. For example, if someone wraps up work at 4 am, they should consider having dinner around 10:30-11 pm, with a small snack at about 1:30-2 am, bedtime by 5 am, and waking around 11 am or noon for lunch. This routine helps maintain a consistent eating schedule, even if it differs from typical hours. While it may not be an ideal situation, such plans serve those navigating unconventional work hours.

Anupama stresses that while these tips can help, nothing substitutes regular meal schedules and good sleep hygiene. Yet in today's fast-paced world, learning to adapt is crucial. Her advice provides encouragement for office workers and night-shift staff, showing that healthy late-night eating is achievable.
