Japan Sees 1% Decline in First-Half Tourist Arrivals Despite 20 Million Visitors

Japan Sees 1% Decline in First-Half Tourist Arrivals Despite 20 Million Visitors

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In the first half of the year, Japan attracted over 20 million international visitors for the second consecutive year. Nevertheless, the overall arrivals dipped by 1% when compared to the same annual timeframe.

This decline can be primarily attributed to a notable decrease in visitors from mainland China, spurred by advisories from the Chinese government urging citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan.

Significant Drop in Chinese Tourists

Throughout the first six months, 2,058,200 visitors from mainland China arrived, reflecting a 56.4% decrease from the corresponding period last year.

This substantial reduction in Chinese arrivals emerged as the key factor affecting Japan’s overall inbound tourism during the first half of the year.

Robust Growth from South Korea and Taiwan

In contrast to the downturn in Chinese visitors, Japan experienced notable growth from other regions.

From South Korea, 5,675,100 visitors were recorded, marking an 18.6% increase compared to the previous year.

Additionally, arrivals from Taiwan reached 3,972,200, representing a 20.9% rise over the same period.

Continued Decline in June Visitor Count

In June, Japan documented approximately 3,148,600 inbound visitors, which is a 6.8% reduction from the same month last year.

This marked the third consecutive month that saw year-on-year declines in monthly visitor figures.

Record June Arrivals from South Korea and Taiwan

Although overall visitor figures fell in June, Japan achieved the highest-ever June totals for tourists from South Korea and Taiwan, signaling ongoing growth from these essential markets.
