Tommy DeCarlo, who rose from being a fan to the lead singer of Boston, has died at the age of 60 after battling brain cancer.
The news of his death was confirmed by his children, Annie, Talia and Tommy Jr., through posts shared on his Facebook and Instagram pages. In their message, they said their father had been struggling with brain cancer for several months and passed away on Monday. They added that he “fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.”
DeCarlo’s journey with the band began in an unusual way. After the death of Boston’s original lead singer Brad Delp in 2007, DeCarlo recorded a tribute song in his honor. At that time, he was 43 years old and working at a Home Depot store in North Carolina.
He posted the tribute along with several Boston cover songs on his Myspace page and shared the link with the band. Although the band initially declined, Boston’s founder, guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz was impressed by how closely DeCarlo’s voice resembled Delp’s.
Scholz later invited DeCarlo to perform at a tribute concert dedicated to Delp. Following the performance, DeCarlo was asked to join Boston as the band’s lead singer.
DeCarlo went on to tour with Boston for nearly two decades and became an important part of the band’s later years. He also performed on the band’s 2013 album Life, Love & Hope.
Boston, formed in 1975, became famous for classic rock hits such as More Than a Feeling and Peace of Mind.
In a biography on the band’s website, DeCarlo once said he never tried to copy Delp’s voice intentionally. He explained that he simply loved singing along with the band’s music.
From a devoted fan posting covers online to leading one of rock’s most iconic bands, Tommy DeCarlo’s journey remained one of the most remarkable stories in modern rock music.
