In a thrilling matchup on Friday night, the Boston Bruins edged past the Los Angeles Kings with a 2-1 overtime victory, thanks to a stellar performance from Morgan Geekie, who netted both of Boston's goals. The decisive moment came just 2:27 into overtime, rejuvenating the Bruins after a challenging streak of three losses in four games.
The overtime erupted when David Pastrnak skillfully maneuvered the puck near the blue line, sending a precise pass to Geekie. In a flash, Geekie unleashed a ferocious shot from the right circle, outsmarting Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper and clinching the win. With this performance, Geekie has now scored in consecutive games with multiple goals, tying him for the league lead at 16 goals alongside Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon.
Supporting Geekie's efforts was defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who tallied two assists, while goalie Jeremy Swayman was stellar between the pipes, blocking 31 of 32 shots. His adept saves kept the team in contention, especially during crucial moments as the Kings pressed for the lead.
Late in the third period, the Kings forced overtime when Joel Armia scored a short-handed goal with 6:57 remaining, marking his third such goal this season—a league high. This came after Swayman made an initial save, only for Armia to pounce on the rebound, leveling the game at 1-1.
Throughout the earlier periods, both teams struggled to find the net despite having several scoring opportunities. The Bruins faced a tense 5-on-3 penalty kill in the first period, with Swayman making a remarkable glove save against a powerful wrist shot from Adrian Kempe, ensuring the Kings remained scoreless.
Los Angeles nearly took the lead early in the second when Kevin Fiala's shot hit the post, followed by a deflection off Swayman's back that was saved just in time. Meanwhile, the Bruins also came close, hitting the post twice in the late second period—first with Riley Tufte and then Pastrnak.
Boston finally broke through at 8:01 into the third period when Alex Steeves delivered a pinpoint pass, allowing Geekie to hammer the puck into the top corner. It appeared the Bruins might pull away from there.
However, the Kings fought back fiercely. Despite Boston earning a power play, Armia's equalizing goal at 13:03 shifted the game's momentum. Regulation ended in a tie, leading to Geekie's overtime heroics.
Despite a 32-26 shot advantage, the Kings suffered from a 0-for-5 power play, contributing to their third consecutive loss and leaving them with just one home win this season.
On the flip side, the Bruins left the rink invigorated. Geekie's exceptional play, alongside Swayman's solid goaltending, bolstered Boston's confidence as they look ahead.
With this victory, the Bruins aim to carry the momentum forward, while the Kings seek to refine their scoring strategies in future games.
