Can Electrolytes Mixed With Alcohol Prevent Hangovers? Insights from a UCLA Doctor

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

There's a growing trend online where people mix electrolyte powders with their alcoholic beverages to stave off hangovers. Social media showcases users adding electrolyte sachets to cocktails, dubbing it a “hangover hack.” But does this actually work? A UCLA physician provides an insightful answer.

Dr. Myro Figura, an anesthesiologist at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Centre, elaborates on the effectiveness of this practice in a video shared on November 11.

Are electrolytes beneficial when mixed with alcohol?

Dr. Figura confirms that electrolytes can be somewhat beneficial. He explains that a hangover often results from dehydration and a depletion of essential minerals. Electrolytes can aid in replenishing these minerals and maintaining hydration levels.

Thus, adding electrolytes to alcoholic drinks may alleviate certain aspects of a hangover.

However, Dr. Figura cautions against having too high expectations. Social media often portrays electrolytes as a complete solution for hangovers, which is misleading. Alcohol impacts the body in various ways, and electrolytes can't mitigate all of these effects.

What should you take away from this?

While electrolytes might help you feel slightly better the next day, they aren’t a foolproof remedy. Overindulgence can still lead to a hangover, even with electrolytes in the mix.

Experts suggest the most effective way to prevent hangovers is straightforward: pace your drinking, stay hydrated with water in between drinks, consume food beforehand, and be aware of your limits.

In summary, while electrolytes provide some relief, they are no miracle solution—contrary to popular belief circulating online.
