China Calls for Reevaluation of UNIFIL Withdrawal from Lebanon

Post by : Shakul

In a recent statement at the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 2, 2026, Fu Cong urged the international community to reassess the plan to withdraw the United Nations peacekeeping forces from Lebanon as regional tensions escalate.

Fu Cong’s remarks come amid an ongoing fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, which he argues does not signify actual peace, but rather a decrease in hostilities.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been critical in maintaining regional stability for many years. Established to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops, its mandate expanded significantly following the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

The UN Security Council’s decision to progressively withdraw UNIFIL by December 2026 is now under reconsideration by various member states due to declining security conditions.

According to Fu Cong, numerous Security Council members now believe that the timing for the withdrawal is inappropriate. He underscored the necessity of UNIFIL’s ongoing presence to avert further unrest.

Recently, Lebanon has witnessed a surge in conflict, marked by airstrikes and fierce confrontations. The violence has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over a million people.

UN peacekeepers have faced heightened dangers during this turmoil, with several casualties among personnel engaged in critical missions, including explosive ordnance disposal and supporting humanitarian aid.

Antonio Guterres has denounced the assaults on peacekeepers, emphasizing their crucial role in complex conflict environments and calling for enhanced protection measures for UN staff.

China has stated that it will await a comprehensive report from the United Nations before finalizing its stance, yet it firmly advocates for a thorough review of the withdrawal strategy to ensure lasting peace and stability in the area.
