Chronic Kidney Disease Cases Surge in India, Alarming Statistics Revealed

Post by : Bianca Haleem

India is now the second-highest country for chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases, affecting around 138 million individuals this year, as reported by a recent study in The Lancet. China leads with 152 million cases. CKD has escalated into a significant health crisis worldwide, ranked as the ninth leading cause of death, with almost 1.5 million fatalities in the last year.

A Growing Global Health Threat

The findings underscore CKD's global reach, with North Africa and the Middle East exhibiting the highest prevalence at 18%, followed by South Asia at 16%, while both Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America see rates surpassing 15%. Healthcare experts caution that areas with pre-existing healthcare disparities are at an increased risk.

CKD's Fatal Connection to Heart Disease

Beyond affecting the kidneys, CKD poses a significant risk for cardiovascular disease, accounting for nearly 12% of global heart-related deaths in 2023. It now ranks as the seventh leading cause of heart mortality, overtaking diseases like diabetes and obesity.

Identified Risk Factors Fueling the Increase

The study outlines fourteen critical risk factors, with diabetes, hypertension, and obesity being the primary contributors to health deterioration. Dietary habits, especially a lack of fruits and vegetables alongside high sodium intake, also greatly elevate risk levels.

Many newly identified patients are in the early stages of CKD, highlighting the necessity for routine screenings and preventive measures. Prompt intervention can hinder disease progression, mitigate heart issues, and delay the need for dialysis or transplants, which are often limited in many regions.

Emphasis on Prevention and Early Care

As CKD cases continue to rise, prioritizing prevention, timely diagnosis, and access to treatment is becoming increasingly critical. Encouraging lifestyle adjustments, promoting balanced diets, and enhancing healthcare accessibility could substantially lessen the burden faced by patients and families globally.
