On Wednesday, tragedy struck in northeast Colombia when a small passenger plane crashed, resulting in the death of all 15 individuals on board. Among the deceased was Diogenes Quintero, a local lawmaker, along with a congressional candidate gearing up for the upcoming elections.
The ill-fated Beechcraft 1900 twin-engine aircraft took off from Cucuta shortly before noon, destined for Ocana. Unfortunately, air traffic control lost contact with the plane just 12 minutes into the flight.
Authorities reported that the emergency locator beacon failed to activate, and there was no distress signal prior to losing communication. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the cause of this tragic incident.
In addition to Quintero, the victims included Carlos Salcedo, a candidate for the upcoming March elections. The airline has confirmed their names in an official passenger list.
Local media shared harrowing images from the crash site, highlighting significant destruction, with the plane's fuselage severely compromised upon impact.
The crash occurred in a remote area known for coca cultivation and the presence of illegal armed groups, complicating rescue and recovery efforts for the victims.
Rescue teams have been deployed to the crash site, where operations to recover bodies and gather evidence are already in motion.
