In a thrilling fourth T20 International held in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, New Zealand triumphed over India by 50 runs, marking their first victory in the five-match series.
Choosing to bat first, New Zealand established a rapid pace as openers Tim Seifert and Devon Conway combined for a substantial 100-run opening partnership. Seifert's aggressive innings of 62 runs and Conway’s supportive 44 put the team in a commanding position.
India managed to disrupt the rhythm when Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Conway in the ninth over, shifting the balance slightly. Jasprit Bumrah took a brilliant return catch to eliminate Rachin Ravindra next, and Arshdeep Singh sent Seifert back to the pavilion after a quick 36-ball knock that included three sixes. Kuldeep continued his excellent bowling, claiming Glenn Phillips for 24 runs.
Despite losing wickets during the middle overs, Daryl Mitchell's outstanding unbeaten 39 off only 18 balls propelled New Zealand to a significant total of 215 for 7.
In their response, India struggled to chase the daunting target. With the series already in their grasp, they made strategic changes, including resting Ishan Kishan due to a minor injury. The alterations in the batting lineup backfired as Abhishek Sharma fell to the very first delivery, and captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed shortly after.
Rinku Singh tried to stabilize the innings with a promising 39, but frequent wickets kept the pressure on India. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner led his team with a stellar bowling performance, finishing with 3 for 26.
Shivam Dube emerged as a bright spot late in the innings, scoring a blistering 65 off just 23 balls, hitting seven sixes that reignited hopes for India. However, his unfortunate run-out due to a deflection from Matt Henry proved to be a turning point. India was ultimately bowled out for 165 in 18.4 overs.
Despite this loss, India maintains a 3-1 lead in the series, with the concluding T20 International scheduled to occur in Thiruvananthapuram this Saturday.
