8 Practical Habits to Enhance Gut Health from an AIIMS-Trained Expert

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Maintaining good gut health is crucial for both physical and mental well-being, with experts highlighting that our daily choices play a significant role. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a distinguished gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, has dedicated 25 years to addressing gastrointestinal and hepatic issues. In a recent post dated November 15, he outlined eight simple habits that anyone can adopt to enhance digestion and foster overall health.

Dr. Sethi emphasizes that gut health is influenced not only by diet but also by how we kick off our mornings, engage in physical activity, and cope with stress. He believes that cultivating sound habits in 2025 can set the stage for improved health in 2026.

His first recommendation is to refrain from checking your phone immediately upon waking. He notes that cortisol levels peak in the morning, and phone use can exacerbate stress. Instead, he advocates starting your day by considering something for which you are grateful, a practice that soothes the mind and aids digestion. Additionally, he warns against using phones in the restroom, as it tends to foster unhealthy habits and adds unnecessary stress.

The second habit involves basking in morning sunlight for at least ten minutes. This practice helps regulate the body's internal clock, enhances mood, boosts vitamin D levels, and ensures the digestive system operates smoothly.

Walking for ten minutes post-meal is another effective strategy. According to Dr. Sethi, this helps optimize digestion, mitigates gas and bloating, and stabilizes blood sugar levels. A simple stroll can significantly influence how the body feels after eating.

He also recommends incorporating fermented foods into your diet at least three times a week. Items like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and kanji enrich the gut with beneficial bacteria, promoting natural digestion and lessening reliance on probiotic supplements.

Dr. Sethi argues that consistent practice of small habits leads to substantial and enduring changes. He urges everyone to focus on manageable actions rather than complex diets or strict regimens. A healthy gut contributes to greater energy, enhanced immunity, and a tranquil mind.

His core message is clear: optimal health originates from the small actions we take each day. By embracing mindful mornings, basking in sunlight, staying active, and consuming nutritious foods, anyone can create a healthier gut and a more fulfilling life.
