Delhi is grappling with hazardous air pollution once again. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in various locations has surged past 300, categorizing it as “very poor” and “hazardous.” In some early morning hours, the AQI even spiked above 700 in certain areas, indicating a significant presence of harmful particles that can infiltrate the lungs, leading to respiratory issues.
Many individuals mistakenly believe that shutting all windows and staying indoors can fully shield them. However, medical professionals caution that indoor air quality can also be compromised. Pollutants from cleaning products, smoke, dust, damp walls, pets, and even furniture materials can render the indoor environment unsafe.
Dr. Sachin Kumar, a pulmonologist based in Bengaluru, has shared ten straightforward and actionable methods to enhance indoor air quality and safeguard family health. His recommendations are easy to implement and don’t necessitate significant lifestyle changes.
Dr. Kumar emphasized that inhaling polluted air introduces tiny particles and gases into our bodies, potentially leading to coughing, asthma, decreased oxygen levels, lung infections, heart conditions, and over time, an increased cancer risk. Vulnerable groups include children, seniors, and pregnant women. Homes with high dampness or inadequate ventilation trap pollutants.
To mitigate these risks, Dr. Kumar advises against allowing cigarette smoke inside the house, as residual smoke clings to clothing and furniture, posing health risks even in the absence of active smoking. He also recommends investing in solid wood furniture instead of inexpensive board materials that contain chemical adhesives. When using powerful cleaning agents like bleach or glass cleaner, wearing a mask is advisable to safeguard the lungs from harmful fumes.
Utilizing an air purifier with a HEPA filter can effectively eliminate up to 99% of dust and pollutants from a room. Opening windows at times when outside pollution is minimal can enhance airflow. It’s critical to address moisture issues within the house, as damp conditions can foster mold and fungus, exacerbating respiratory problems. Employing fans, dehumidifiers, and fixing leaks can help manage humidity levels.
If you own pets, regular grooming and cleaning can significantly reduce dust and allergens indoors. Additionally, it’s prudent to refrain from using wood for indoor heating or cooking, as it emits noxious smoke; electric or solar heating options are safer alternatives. Certain indoor plants, such as aloe vera, peace lily, and snake plant, can naturally enhance air quality.
As outdoor air pollution reaches alarming heights, ensuring clean indoor air becomes crucial. Implementing these minor changes can protect lung health and promote overall family wellness. While enduring solutions to pollution require systemic changes and government intervention, every household can take steps to foster a safer indoor atmosphere.
