The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi is preparing to unveil its newly modernized Terminal 2 (T2) on October 26, 2025. This significant renovation aims to enhance passenger comfort and streamline flight operations, accommodating various domestic airlines with state-of-the-art facilities and expedited services.
Enhanced Facilities and Design
The updated Terminal 2 has been reimagined to facilitate a more efficient and enjoyable travel experience. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced that the terminal now includes a spacious check-in zone, advanced baggage handling systems, upgraded waiting lounges, and improved dining areas.
New technology such as digital displays, touch-screen check-in kiosks, and smart security lanes have been implemented to simplify the passenger experience. Additionally, energy-efficient lighting, wider pathways, and comfortable seating arrangements are now part of the terminal's offerings.
According to officials, the renovations were necessary to accommodate the increasing number of travelers in the capital, ensuring that passengers experience less congestion and shorter queues.
Airlines Transitioning to the Upgraded Terminal
Starting October 26, several domestic flights previously operating from Terminal 1 will now relocate to Terminal 2.
DIAL reports that airlines such as IndiGo and SpiceJet are expected to begin operating a portion of their flights from the refurbished terminal. This shift aims to better balance air traffic between terminals and provide travelers with a more pleasant experience.
Passengers are encouraged to review their flight details prior to arriving at the airport to avoid any potential mix-ups.
“Travelers should always confirm their terminal information before heading to the airport. Updated flight details can be found on airline websites and at the airport’s information centers,” stated a representative from DIAL.
Rationale Behind the Upgrade
The expansion and modernization of Terminal 2 are components of a broader airport development initiative aimed at managing the growing volume of passengers at one of India’s busiest airports, serving over 70 million travelers annually.
As air travel surges post-pandemic, airport authorities have opted to distribute flight operations more evenly to lessen the overcrowding at Terminals 1 and 3.
The revamped layout will also facilitate easier scheduling for airlines and passenger movement between terminals through improved shuttle services and signage.
Travel Tips and Passenger Guidelines
The airport has issued guidelines for passengers utilizing the newly opened terminal:
Additionally, eco-friendly electric buses will be operational to transport connecting passengers between terminals.
Emphasis on Sustainability
This renovation project was designed not only for passenger comfort but also with a focus on sustainability. Terminal 2 is constructed with green technologies to minimize its ecological footprint.
The terminal incorporates solar energy, recycled water systems, and initiatives for waste reduction. It is being developed to meet criteria for a “Green Building” certification, showcasing it as one of the most sustainable airport terminals in India.
“Our aim was to create a terminal that is user-friendly and environmentally conscious,” said a senior DIAL official. “We seek to position IGI Airport as a benchmark for sustainable aviation globally.”
Effects on Flight Operations
The reopening of T2 will lead to a decrease in flight operations at Terminal 1 to reduce crowding, which is anticipated to improve on-time performance, mitigate delays, and enhance passenger movement throughout the airport.
DIAL expects the revamped terminal to accommodate approximately 15 million passengers annually. Future expansion may involve additional check-in counters and more gates dedicated to domestic flights.
What Passengers Can Look Forward To
Early visitors who previewed the new terminal design praised its contemporary aesthetics and space management.
“It feels like a brand-new airport,” remarked one traveler who experienced the test phase. “The lines are shorter, and everything is sleek and inviting.”
A Vision for Future Growth
The reopening of Terminal 2 is part of Delhi Airport’s ambitious long-term goal to establish itself as a world-class aviation hub. With several modernization projects in progress, IGIA aims to serve over 100 million passengers annually in the near future.
Currently, the airport operates three runways and is gearing up to introduce new facilities to enhance international connections.
