Delhi Monsoon Showers Offer Brief Respite from Heatwave

Post by : Shakul

On Friday morning, residents of New Delhi and the surrounding NCR region were greeted by light showers and overcast skies, providing a welcome departure from the oppressive heat that had lingered for several days. This unexpected weather shift ushered in cooler breezes and a drop in temperature after a prolonged heatwave.

The India Meteorological Department reports that these rain showers and thunderstorms were triggered by weather disturbances in northwest India. The precipitation offered some respite, alleviating the harsh summer conditions that have challenged many in the capital.

Prior to the rain, Delhi experienced severe heat with temperatures soaring above 43 degrees Celsius. The city’s main weather station, Safdarjung, recorded a peak temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius, remaining elevated beyond the typical seasonal averages, even with the recent cooler winds.

Weather specialists noted that wind patterns from Rajasthan and the arid Thar Desert escalated the heatwave by desiccating the atmosphere. The recent change in airflow has resulted in a temporary cooling effect and heightened humidity levels.

The IMD has cautioned that heatwave conditions may persist in Delhi until May 28, with expectations that temperatures could climb back to approximately 45 degrees Celsius as warm desert air returns to northern India.

Meteorologists have also hinted at possible isolated thunderstorms and light rain in the evenings and early mornings over the next few days. However, these occurrences are not likely to cause significant changes in daytime temperatures for an extended period.

Experts anticipate that pre-monsoon activities in early June might provide more enduring relief from the ongoing heatwave. Meanwhile, residents are advised to stay hydrated, minimize sun exposure during peak hours, and heed official weather updates.
