Fatal Car Blast at Delhi's Red Fort Claims Eight Lives, NIA Investigates Connections

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A devastating car blast near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday evening has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, prompting a comprehensive investigation into potential terrorist affiliations. Authorities are scrutinizing the incident for possible links to the recent apprehension of seven suspects in Indian-administered Kashmir and the confiscation of 2,900kg of explosives in Faridabad.

The explosion took place at 18:52 local time when a vehicle slowed at a crowded traffic signal and ignited. Footage from the scene reveals the remnants of a burned white Hyundai i20 alongside damaged vehicles, including autorickshaws and cycle rickshaws.

Indian officials characterize the assault as “a barbaric terror act carried out by anti-national elements.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “conspiracy,” vowing that “all perpetrators will face justice.” Both Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed this commitment, with Shah ordering officials to “track down every individual involved in this incident.”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), India's specialized counter-terrorism unit, is now overseeing the investigation. Officials are delving into a wealth of documents and probing various avenues, including potential connections between the Delhi explosion, recent arrests in Kashmir, and the Faridabad explosives discovery.

Previously, Jammu and Kashmir police detained seven persons, among them two doctors, citing a “white-collar terror network.” Authorities have also seized firearms, with two automatic rifles and 2,900kg of bomb-making materials. Investigators are examining a man pictured in circulating images purported to be the driver of the car involved in the Delhi explosion, although details remain unverified.

Access to the Red Fort vicinity is restricted as investigations are underway. Officials have yet to disclose information regarding the ownership of the vehicle or the exact cause of the explosion. Simultaneously, unverified reports and leaks in the local media are fueling speculation, with police emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing, and all leads are being meticulously explored.

This tragic incident underscores persistent concerns related to urban safety and the increasing hurdles in detecting coordinated terror activities in India’s capital. Authorities are urging the public to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviors as the NIA conducts a thorough investigation.
