Health Tips from a Diet Expert for Combatting Pollution

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The issue of air pollution in Delhi-NCR continues to rise, compelling many to adopt precautions like masks and air purifiers. However, dietician Sonal Sureka emphasizes that internal protection is equally vital. The food we consume significantly impacts our ability to withstand high pollution levels.

According to Sureka, our dietary choices can serve as an internal defense mechanism. When air quality declines, the body requires extra support to combat harmful substances. Incorporating foods high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties can be transformative. Such foods defend the body’s cells and support respiratory function.

She advises that meals during pollution periods should be vibrant and varied. A colorful assortment of fruits and vegetables ensures different vitamins and minerals are consumed. Whole foods like fresh produce, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes deliver robust nutrition, surpassing the benefits of processed foods.

Protein intake is also critical. Lean proteins such as dal, paneer, eggs, fish, and chicken are essential for maintaining muscle strength, particularly those used in the breathing process. Adequate hydration is crucial as well, aiding in mucus clearance and keeping the throat loose.

Additionally, the dietitian proposes calming herbal drinks to comfort the throat and lungs. A mixture of boiling water with tulsi leaves, black pepper, and a pinch of turmeric can be beneficial. Consuming this soothing beverage twice daily may help alleviate nasal discomfort and irritation from pollution.

The core message is clear: while pollution affects our environment, a careful approach to diet can bolster our internal defenses. While masks and filter systems offer outside protection, maintaining a healthy diet fortifies our resilience against polluted air. Making mindful food choices daily can significantly enhance the body’s resistance to these harmful effects.
