A prominent nutritionist from Dubai, Prachi Mandholia, leveraging over 16 years in the field, has identified five crucial superfoods to promote health during the chilly winter months. Prachi emphasized that while winter invites cozy attire and delicious seasonal meals, it may also trigger health issues such as colds and fatigue. The key to maintaining vitality in this season lies in selecting the right foods readily available in kitchens.
Prachi noted that despite the comforts of winter, many find themselves feeling unwell due to the body's depletion of energy in colder temperatures. Consuming seasonal and locally sourced foods becomes essential. She highlighted that these superfoods can enhance immunity, elevate energy levels, aid digestion, and even brighten the complexion.
Among these, mustard greens, commonly referred to as sarson, are essential for building internal strength and warmth. Often featured in winter meals, they offer nutrients vital for bolstering the immune system. Bajra, a well-liked ingredient for flatbreads, keeps the body warm and provides sustained energy, making it ideal for cold days.
Carrots are another vital winter staple; they are packed with vitamins that not only improve eyesight but also grant the skin a healthy glow. Carrots can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes, including salads, soups, or the beloved Indian dessert gajar ka halwa, especially popular during the winter.
Sesame seeds, known as til, are potent winter delights as well. They assist with digestion and enhance energy levels. Frequently incorporated in laddu, chikki, and other homemade winter snacks, sesame seeds are effective in maintaining warmth and overall health.
Finally, oranges round out Prachi’s list. These succulent fruits are abundant in vitamin C, crucial for fighting infections, guarding against colds, and keeping skin looking fresh. Consuming an orange daily can significantly boost immunity and fulfill the nutritional demands of winter.
Prachi believes winter should not equate to illness or lethargy. With these nutritional choices, anyone can remain energized, healthy, and happy throughout the colder months. She recommends integrating mustard greens, bajra, carrots, sesame seeds, and oranges into daily diets, emphasizing that these items are easily accessible, budget-friendly, and beneficial for families.
Furthermore, Prachi mentioned that our kitchens can serve as mini pharmacies in winter if we select the appropriate ingredients. Seasonal produce is naturally tailored to sustain the body under varying weather circumstances, with winter foods especially renowned for their immune-boosting and warming properties.
By adopting simple dietary changes and embracing these natural superfoods, individuals can remain resilient and safeguarded all winter long.
