Recently, the National Library and Archives unveiled a notable book titled “Abu Dhabi Before 1971”, which offers a unique visual exploration of life in the emirate prior to the formation of the United Arab Emirates. Created in partnership with publishing house Assouline, this publication serves as a crucial historical document from a pivotal era before the nation's unity.

The book begins with a foreword by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court.

Comprising an exquisite selection of rare archival photographs safeguarded by the National Library and Archives, many of these images see the light of day for the first time. This makes the book an invaluable resource for safeguarding the collective memory of the UAE and fostering awareness of its historical narrative.

The showcased photographs depict various aspects of daily life in Abu Dhabi before modernization and the oil boom transformed the landscape. From traditional markets and schools to community gatherings, the images exemplify a society founded on collaboration, unity, and strong social ethics.

Furthermore, the publication captures genuine moments from the lives of everyday individuals, providing readers with a profound appreciation of Emirati traditions and culture from this period. The visuals portray a tightly-knit community, whose resilience and values were instrumental in laying the groundwork for the contemporary United Arab Emirates.

According to the National Library and Archives, the book not only pays homage to the nation’s historical memory but also serves as an essential reference for future generations. Through its extraordinary photographs and thoughtful presentation, “Abu Dhabi Before 1971” grants readers an insightful glimpse into the emirate’s past and the roots of the UAE’s identity.
