Unveiling Isabgol: Beyond Just Relief for Constipation

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Isabgol, commonly referred to as psyllium husk, is a staple in many kitchens, primarily recognized for its quick relief from constipation. Yet, nutritionists highlight that this simple fiber packs a punch with its multitude of health advantages.

Nutritionist Kanchan Nayyar, a gut health specialist, describes isabgol as a potent source of soluble fiber that aids digestion, weight management, and blood sugar regulation. In a recent video, she showcased how its benefits can vary based on consumption timing and method.

While its most noted use is for easing constipation, isabgol shines when combined with warm water or milk, where it absorbs water in the digestive tract to soften stools and promote regular bowel movements. Experts recommend taking one tablespoon in the evening for optimal outcomes.

Isabgol also combats acidity effectively. When consumed with cold milk, it creates a soothing barrier in the stomach, alleviating irritation and discomfort, particularly after indulging in heavy or spicy foods.

Additionally, it plays a role in managing weight. When ingested with lukewarm water prior to meals, it helps promote a feeling of fullness, which can curb overeating and snacking, making it easier to manage calorie intake.

During episodes of diarrhoea, isabgol can assist as well. Mixing it with curd helps to regulate gut bacteria and absorbs excess intestinal water, aiding in the recovery from loose motions.

For those monitoring blood sugar, isabgol can be beneficial too. Consumed with water post-meal, it has the capacity to slow the rate of glucose absorption into the bloodstream, preventing sudden spikes—crucial for those managing diabetes or insulin resistance.

While isabgol is a natural product, health professionals advise caution. Adequate water intake is essential when consuming fiber, and individuals with specific medical conditions should consult a healthcare provider before integrating it into their daily routine.

In a landscape dominated by costly supplements and intricate dietary trends, isabgol emerges as a straightforward, affordable, and adaptable choice. When utilized correctly, this unassuming fiber offers holistic health benefits that extend beyond mere constipation relief.
