Concerns Over Long-Term Use of Melatonin and Heart Failure Risks

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A recent investigation by the American Heart Association indicates a potential correlation between extended use of melatonin and an elevated risk of heart failure. Known globally as a popular sleep aid, melatonin has now come under scrutiny regarding its long-term safety.

Heart transplant surgeon Dr. Dmitry Yaranov elaborated on the findings in a social media video. He emphasized that while the study identifies a connection between melatonin consumption and heart-related issues, it does not establish a direct causative relationship. Thus, the link is acknowledged, yet causation remains unproven.

The study tracked over 130,000 individuals suffering from insomnia over a five-year period. It revealed that those regularly using melatonin faced a staggering 90% higher risk of developing heart failure, requiring hospitalization, or succumbing to heart-related ailments, leaving many astonished.

Dr. Yaranov pointed out that the principal concern lies with those relying on melatonin nightly, as they often harbor more significant health concerns. Many may confront substantial sleep disorders, elevated stress levels, or sleep apnea—conditions that obstruct breathing while asleep and heighten heart-related risks. These health issues could be the underlying factors attributing to the observed increase in heart failure risk rather than melatonin itself.

He reassured viewers that melatonin is typically safe for brief usage, yet long-term nightly use without addressing the root cause of sleep difficulties raises issues.

Dr. Yaranov recommended consulting a healthcare professional if melatonin becomes a nightly necessity for sleep. Identifying and managing the true causes of sleep issues is essential, as quality sleep is intrinsically connected to heart health. Merely addressing the symptom of sleeplessness could mask a more serious health concern.

Experts assert that further exploratory studies are vital to definitively assess any potential impact of melatonin on heart health. In the interim, individuals are encouraged to exercise caution with melatonin usage, staying mindful of its implications.

In summary, while melatonin hasn't been officially deemed harmful, a consistent reliance on it may indicate a need for medical evaluation. Prioritizing good sleep is crucial for long-term well-being and should not be overlooked.
