Neurologist Dr. Rahul Chawla Highlights Crucial Stroke Warning Signs

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A stroke is a severe medical emergency that can strike without warning. Medical professionals stress that early recognition of symptoms and prompt assistance can save lives and avert permanent disabilities. Dr. Rahul Chawla, a neurologist trained at AIIMS, conveys the critical need to acknowledge even mild symptoms of a stroke.

Practicing at IBS Hospital in New Delhi and the founder of HealthPil.com, Dr. Chawla shared insights in an Instagram video about how strokes can sometimes begin with brief symptoms known as Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs), or "mini-strokes." Although these can resolve themselves within hours, they are serious indicators of a more significant stroke forthcoming.

As per Dr. Chawla, a TIA may present symptoms such as tingling or numbness in a limb, slurred speech, facial drooping, or difficulty maintaining balance while walking. These issues can remit quickly, but that does not imply everything is alright. He noted, "A stroke occurs suddenly. There may be no antecedent headache or early signs."

Dr. Chawla recounted a patient’s experience to illustrate the dangers of neglecting these signs. This 60-year-old man, with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking, suddenly experienced weakness and numbness. He also observed a diminished grip in his hand, clear indicators of a stroke.

Though he rushed to the hospital, by the time he arrived, his symptoms had vanished. Assuming he was fine, he left without medical evaluation. The next morning, the symptoms returned but subsided again before he could reach the hospital. Dr. Chawla cautioned him that these episodes were TIAs and that he was at imminent risk for a full stroke.

Regrettably, he overlooked this warning once again. A few hours later, he suffered a major stroke that resulted in complete loss of function in his hand and leg, necessitating a wheelchair for transport to the hospital. An MRI revealed he had experienced a substantial stroke in the right hemisphere of his brain, specifically termed the “Right MCA Territory infarct.”

Dr. Chawla emphasized the urgency of immediate action. When a stroke occurs, there’s typically a narrow window of about three hours for treatments that can dissolve the obstructive blood clot in the brain. Delayed intervention can lead to irreversible damage, resulting in paralysis or death.

He pointed out that many individuals mistake early stroke indicators for fatigue or stress. Nevertheless, symptoms such as unilateral weakness, slurred speech, facial drooping, dizziness, or loss of coordination should always warrant immediate medical attention, even if they resolve temporarily.

To mitigate the risk of strokes, Dr. Chawla encouraged maintaining healthy habits: controlling blood pressure, effectively managing diabetes, quitting smoking, curbing alcohol consumption, and engaging in regular exercise. A wholesome lifestyle and routine checkups can significantly diminish stroke risks.

A stroke transpires when the blood flow to a portion of the brain is blocked or diminished, preventing brain tissue from receiving vital oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells can perish within minutes. Rapid action can limit the extent of damage and enhance recovery prospects.

Dr. Chawla's vital message is unequivocal: never dismiss even temporary numbness, weakness, or speech troubles. These are potential precursors to a serious issue. Prompt medical intervention could differentiate between a full recovery and a lifelong disability.
