Bahrain Highlights Maritime Safety at IMO General Assembly

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Minister of Transport and Communications, participated in the 34th session of the General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the United Kingdom. The event gathered maritime leaders and experts from around the world to discuss global shipping safety, environmental protection, and sustainable maritime development.

In his address to the General Assembly, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla highlighted that Bahrain has been an active member of the IMO since joining the organization. He said that the Kingdom strongly supports the IMO’s goals of promoting maritime safety, protecting the environment, and ensuring sustainable shipping practices globally. The minister emphasized that international conventions and treaties play a crucial role in developing a safe and sustainable maritime sector in Bahrain.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla explained that the Kingdom fully implements its international commitments through a modern legislative and regulatory system. One of the key frameworks is the Maritime Law issued in 2022, which ensures compliance with all international maritime conventions. This law provides clear rules for protecting lives, property, and the safe navigation of ships in Bahraini waters. The legislation reflects Bahrain’s dedication to meeting global standards while promoting a secure and well-regulated maritime environment.

The minister also underlined Bahrain’s focus on marine environmental protection. He described safeguarding oceans and seas as a humanitarian and ethical responsibility. Bahrain follows a modern legislative approach based primarily on the MARPOL Convention, which sets international standards for preventing marine pollution. Dr. Shaikh Abdulla noted that the Kingdom is working to accede to the remaining MARPOL annexes, supporting its national plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2060. This commitment shows Bahrain’s dedication to balancing maritime development with environmental sustainability.

During his speech, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla highlighted the IMO’s theme for this year: "Our Ocean, Our Commitment, Our Opportunity." He explained that this theme underlines the critical role oceans play in the global economy, the environment, and human life. Oceans are considered a lifeline for millions of people, providing resources, transportation routes, and environmental benefits. The minister stressed that Bahrain is committed to both economic growth and environmental responsibility in its maritime sector.

The minister also shared Bahrain’s achievements in maritime governance, noting that the Kingdom has adopted an advanced regulatory framework that enhances compliance with international standards. These measures aim to improve ship safety, reduce accidents, protect marine biodiversity, and ensure environmentally responsible shipping operations. By implementing these standards, Bahrain demonstrates leadership in both regional and global maritime affairs.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla concluded by reaffirming Bahrain’s dedication to collaboration with the IMO and other international maritime organizations. He emphasized that Bahrain will continue to play a proactive role in supporting safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly maritime practices. The Kingdom’s approach combines legal, ethical, and technological solutions to ensure that maritime activities remain safe, efficient, and responsible for future generations.
