Historic Launch of ICOM 2025 in Dubai

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dubai made a significant milestone as His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum officially opened the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025). This landmark global conference, held under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, marks a historic first for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia to host the renowned event.

Themed “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” the conference gathers over 4,500 professionals from the museum sector, including cultural leaders and decision-makers, underscoring Dubai's expanding position as a pivotal hub for culture, creativity, and knowledge transfer.

The inaugural ceremony saw the presence of key UAE figures, including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and His Excellency Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, alongside international ministers and cultural professionals.

Innovation and Heritage on Display

On the conference's inaugural day, Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikha Latifa explored the Museum Fair, showcasing over 100 institutions from around the globe, featuring advanced technologies, interactive displays, and imaginative projects that are transforming museum experiences. This fair acted as a hub for collaboration, fostering new partnerships within the global museum community.

Sheikha Latifa, Chairperson of Dubai Culture, delivered an inspiring keynote celebrating Dubai’s capability to intertwine various cultures and perspectives. She referred to the event as a “convergence of worlds”, where diverse narratives, traditions, and innovations come together, forming an evolving archive of human creativity. Reflecting on Dubai’s cultural evolution, she emphasized the city's unique strength stemming from its historical foundation of exchange, creativity, and receptiveness to new ideas.

Diversity and Dialogue in Focus

The opening sessions delved into subjects of Intangible Heritage, Youth Empowerment, and Emerging Technologies, discussing how museums can remain relevant in fast-evolving societies. A prominent session titled “AI and Museums: From Vision to Global Action,” convened specialists from ICOM and UNESCO to explore the role of artificial intelligence in safeguarding and interpreting culture.

Notably, Arabic has been included as an official language for the first time in ICOM’s history, a vital milestone reflecting the region’s growing presence in the worldwide cultural arena.

Empowering Youth and Digital Futures

The first day also featured engaging workshops for young professionals like “Reverse Mentoring: Empowering Youth for Museums and Heritage,” led by Singapore’s National Heritage Board. Experts from notable institutions, including Art Jameel, NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, and LinkedIn MENA, shared their insights on the future directions of museum leadership, conservation, and digital advancements.

Masterclasses on “Strategies for Conservation,” led by international specialists, examined both conventional and technology-enhanced preservation methods.

As ICOM Dubai 2025 progresses through the week, the city stands as a cultural bridge—where heritage merges with innovation, and history fuels the future. Through this global gathering, Dubai reiterates its ambition to be more than just a host of international events, but a vibrant home for creativity, dialogue, and shared human narratives.
