Dubai Sports Economy to Reach AED 18.3 Billion by 2033

Dubai has further strengthened its status as one of the world's leading sports economy capitals through a long-term strategy that has transformed sport into a key contributor to economic growth. By combining sports, tourism, investment, technology and business, the emirate continues to expand the role of the sports sector in supporting sustainable development and attracting global investors.

The city's growing success comes from hosting major international sporting events, developing world-class sports infrastructure, and creating an integrated ecosystem that supports sports tourism, media, innovation and commercial partnerships.

Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 Targets Major Growth

Under the Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, the emirate aims to increase the sports sector's contribution to its gross domestic product (GDP) from AED 10.17 billion annually to AED 18.3 billion by 2033. This represents an increase of nearly 80 percent compared with current levels.

The strategy also aims to significantly expand public participation in sports events. Annual attendance at major sporting events is expected to grow from 1.67 million people to more than 4.1 million, while the number of major sporting events is planned to increase by up to 250 percent over the coming years.

Dubai Economic Agenda D33 Supports Sports Industry Growth

With the launch of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, the sports sector has become one of the key pillars of Dubai's future economy. Growth is being supported by expanding sports tourism, broadcasting rights, commercial sponsorships, sports content creation and the digital economy connected to sports.

Dubai currently hosts more than 400 local and international sporting events every year across multiple disciplines. The emirate also welcomes around 100 training camps annually for leading international clubs and national teams. These activities continue to generate economic benefits for hospitality, aviation, tourism, retail and service industries.

Major Sports Events Boost Tourism and Business

Among Dubai's flagship sporting events is the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which continues to attract many of the world's top tennis players while receiving extensive regional and international media coverage. The tournament has played an important role in strengthening Dubai's reputation as a leading global sporting destination.

Salah Tahlak, Tournament Director of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, said the tournament's continued success reflects Dubai's leadership in hosting major sporting events. He added that international tournaments have become an important platform for supporting the economy, boosting tourism, promoting Dubai globally, and attracting sports investment and partnerships.

The Dubai Marathon also remains one of the world's leading marathon races. Every year, it attracts thousands of runners from different countries, generating direct economic benefits for the hospitality, hotel, aviation and retail sectors.

Ahmed Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon, said sport has become an important economic driver for Dubai because of the tourism, investment and media value generated by international sporting events. He added that the Dubai Marathon represents a successful example of the growing economic contribution of major sports competitions.

Dubai Expands Portfolio of International Sporting Events

In recent years, Dubai has broadened its international sporting calendar by hosting global golf tournaments, international mixed martial arts competitions, major cricket events, and large-scale running, cycling and marine sports competitions.

This diversified approach has helped the emirate reach wider audiences w hile increasing the overall economic returns generated by the sports sector.

Basketball and Esports Open New Investment Opportunities

As part of its strategy to attract sports with large international fan bases, Dubai launched the Dubai Basketball project, with the team joining the European ABA League. The move represents another strategic step in strengthening Dubai's position as a regional and global centre for sports investment.

Dubai has also established itself as an important destination for esports, one of the world's fastest-growing sports industries. The sector creates new investment opportunities linked to the digital economy, content creation and youth engagement.

Ahmed Al Khaja, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said events such as the Dubai Esports and Games Festival demonstrate the rapid expansion of the esports sector and its growing contribution to Dubai's creative economy by attracting visitors and participants from different age groups and interests.

Football Training Camps and Global Sports Leadership

Dubai has become a preferred winter training destination for leading football clubs and national teams because of its advanced sports infrastructure and world-class hospitality facilities. These training camps continue to generate direct and indirect economic benefits for both the sports and tourism sectors.

The emirate also reinforces its global leadership by hosting the Dubai International Sports Conference, which brings together sports leaders, decision-makers, experts and athletes to discuss the future of sports investment, innovation, artificial intelligence and technology.

International Exposure Strengthens Dubai's Global Image

Major sporting events hosted in Dubai also enhance the emirate's global profile through extensive international media coverage. Broadcasts across television networks and digital platforms showcase Dubai's landmarks, sports venues and attractions to hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, further strengthening its international reputation as a leading destination for sports, tourism and investment.
