Achieving quick weight loss is often a popular New Year’s resolution or post-holiday goal. Many individuals seek to shed 2 kilograms within a week, but fitness coach Kush Malhotra cautions that pursuing rapid results through extreme diets or excessive cardio is neither safe nor effective.
Kush emphasizes that sustainable fat loss is a gradual process. In a recent Instagram post, he noted that significant changes on the scale are typically attributable to water weight rather than actual fat loss. To attain long-lasting results, one should adhere to healthy lifestyle habits.
Understanding Water Weight vs. True Fat Loss
Many individuals mistakenly equate weight loss with fat loss. According to Kush, a realistic expectation is a fat loss of approximately 500 grams weekly, achievable through a daily calorie deficit of 500 calories. Rapid weight reduction through extreme diets or intense workouts primarily involves loss of water weight.
“Restricting carbohydrates and engaging in several hours of cardio may yield a temporary weight loss of 1.5 kilograms, but this primarily consists of water, not fat,” Kush cautions, underscoring that authentic fat loss requires time and diligence.
Three Key Tips for Authentic Fat Loss
1. Achieve a Daily Caloric Deficit
Aiming for a moderate deficit of 250 to 500 calories daily will help burn stored fat safely. Steer clear of drastic dieting, which may lead to muscle loss, fatigue, and a sluggish metabolism.
2. Ensure Adequate Protein Intake
Incorporating 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight helps safeguard muscle during the fat loss journey. Adequate protein can also prolong the feeling of fullness, making it easier to adhere to a balanced diet.
3. Implement Weight Training 4–5 Times Weekly
Engaging in consistent strength training can boost muscle development, increase caloric expenditure, and enhance metabolism. It also aids in body sculpting, bone strengthening, and long-term fitness maintenance.
Mindset for Success: Cultivating Patience
Kush stresses the significance of a proper mindset. “Fat wasn’t gained overnight, and it won’t be lost overnight,” he explains. Cultivating patience and concentrating on daily healthy behaviors is crucial for effective fat loss.
Expert Validation of Recommendations
Edwina Raj, the head of clinical nutrition at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, backs Kush's insights. She points out that fluctuations in water weight can occur due to factors like salt intake, hormonal changes, insufficient sleep, or stress, while genuine fat reduction necessitates consistent effort.
Edwina agrees that maintaining a slight calorie deficit, adequate protein consumption, and regular strength training is vital for both safe and effective fat loss. “This method allows individuals to lose fat without experiencing weakness, supports muscle conservation, and maintains metabolic activity,” she elaborates.
Achieving fat loss is not about quick fixes or crash diets. Authentic and sustainable results stem from consistent daily practices: implementing a moderate caloric deficit, ensuring adequate protein intake, and committing to regular strength training. Ultimately, patience, consistency, and a balanced approach are the keys to effective and safe fat loss.
