Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has restarted production at its Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi after operations were halted following Iranian drone attacks on Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi in March.
The emergency shutdown came after the attack caused significant damage to property and left several EGA employees injured. Since then, the company has been working to safely restore operations at the refinery.
EGA said the refinery is expected to increase production to 50 per cent of its total capacity within the next few days. The company is aiming for a complete return to alumina production by the end of 2026.

The restart marks an important step in bringing the facility back to normal operations after the disruption caused by the March incident.
"The dedication and agility of the team at Al Taweelah alumina refinery has enabled us to reach this milestone safely and quickly," said Abdulnasser bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA.
The company credited its employees for helping restart production while maintaining safety throughout the recovery process.
EGA also confirmed that the ongoing increase in aluminium production at the Al Taweelah smelter is not dependent on the refinery reaching full production capacity.
The alumina refinery and aluminium smelter are located next to each other. Alumina is the key raw material used to produce aluminium and is typically transported from the refinery to storage before being moved to the smelter through a conveyor belt system.
The Al Taweelah alumina refinery began production in 2019. In 2025, the facility produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina, supplying 46 per cent of EGA's total alumina requirements.
The company expects the refinery to continue increasing production in stages until it reaches full operational capacity by the end of 2026.
