During a leadership forum at the University of Cambridge, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan underscored the imperative for enhanced collaboration, innovative strategies, and effective climate actions.
The event, hosted at Robinson College, was part of the Sustainability Leadership Alumni Insight Sharing Day. Joining forces with Lindsay Hooper, CEO of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Sheikha Shamma engaged in a profound dialogue on impactful climate leadership and the trajectory of sustainability.
In her remarks, Sheikha Shamma called for a swift acceleration in climate solutions both within the UAE and the broader region. She argued for a rapid scaling of existing solutions and the urgent removal of barriers that hinder innovation to achieve long-term sustainability aims.
She stressed the necessity for a comprehensive sustainability ecosystem where eco-friendly practices are deeply embedded within organizations rather than treated as mere checkbox tasks.
On the topic of global teamwork, Sheikha Shamma emphasized the importance of nations and organizations collaborating amid increasing global divides. She asserted that everyone shares an obligation to help forge a better future for succeeding generations.
Highlighting individual contributions, she pointed out that climate leadership encompasses not just those in climate-specific roles. According to her, individuals across diverse professions can promote climate awareness and collaboration within their fields and networks.
She elaborated on how climate issues transcend various sectors, necessitating interdisciplinary teamwork. People applying systems thinking and sustainability principles in their professional lives can create substantial and enduring impacts.
Currently, Sheikha Shamma is the President and CEO of Frontier25 and The Climate Tribe. She also chairs Alliances for Global Sustainability, RESET MENA, and Aurora50.
Sheikha Shamma holds a Master's in Sustainability Leadership and an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Cambridge.
