Ethiopian Volcanic Ash Poses New Threat to India’s Air Quality

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

India is currently grappling with “very poor” air quality this winter, and a new challenge has emerged. Ash from the Hayli Gubbi eruption in Ethiopia has made its way into Indian airspace. This ash consists of fine particles and sulfur dioxide that can aggravate respiratory issues for individuals across various cities.

Health professionals note that the air is already burdened with elevated PM2.5 levels, and the introduction of volcanic ash may heighten symptoms such as coughing, irritation, and breathlessness, even in those without pre-existing respiratory problems.

The Dangers of Volcanic Ash

Dr. Swapnil Mehta, a Senior Consultant in Pulmonology at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital in Mumbai, explains that volcanic ash contains sharp, irregular particles. When mixed with urban pollutants, these particles can penetrate deeper into the lungs, eliciting stronger reactions.

This combination might lead to airway spasms, throat irritation, and increased oxidative stress, posing significant risks for individuals with asthma or COPD. Vulnerable groups like children and the elderly may find their lungs particularly affected by sudden pollution spikes.

Anticipated Symptoms in the Coming Days

Medical experts predict that many may experience symptoms within the next 24–48 hours. Commonly reported signs include:

Persistent cough

Breathlessness or chest pressure

Wheezing

Burning or teary eyes

Sore throat

Sneezing or nasal irritation

Headaches or fatigue

Those experiencing difficulty speaking or severe shortness of breath should seek medical attention immediately.

Lingering Particles May Still Be Hazardous

Even if the volcanic ash dissipates today, the air may remain polluted. Fine particles can linger for 24–72 hours. In India, pollutants can interact with sulfur dioxide, forming new harmful particles, leading to a slow recovery.

The Increased Risks for Vulnerable Groups

Children with smaller airways, older adults with diminished lung function, and asthma sufferers tend to react swiftly to shifts in air quality. As a result, even minor increases in pollution levels can trigger severe responses. Health experts advise these groups to remain vigilant until air conditions improve.

Possible Escalation of Health Issues

Doctors caution that the combination of volcanic ash and pollution could lead to:

Asthma exacerbations

Acute bronchitis

Deterioration of COPD

An increased likelihood of respiratory infections

Inflamed airways lose their defense mechanisms, making them more susceptible to viral and bacterial attacks.

Recommended Precautions

Dr. Mehta advises the following measures for safety:

Limit outdoor exposure.

Wear an N95 mask when outside.

Keep windows closed, especially in high-traffic areas.

Utilize indoor air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters.

Adhere to prescribed medications and inhalers without interruption.

Stay hydrated and consider steam inhalation or saline nasal rinses.

Children, the elderly, and asthma sufferers are advised to avoid outdoor physical activities entirely.

This information does not serve as a medical diagnosis, and individuals experiencing severe symptoms should consult a healthcare professional.
