In western Manitoba, communities are grappling with extensive flooding following a deluge from powerful thunderstorms, leading to sudden evacuations and emergency rescues. Local authorities report that around 150 individuals have been displaced as they work to evaluate the extent of the damage and restore critical services.
The intense weather hit the Parkland region of Manitoba on Sunday evening, unleashing significant rainfall in a short period. Areas in the Swan Valley saw flash floods, resulting in washed-out roads, damaged bridges, and homes engulfed by water.
Bill Gade, Reeve of Swan Valley West, noted that the flooding escalated swiftly, with water levels rising inches per minute. Some individuals found themselves trapped in their residences, seeking refuge on rooftops until rescue teams arrived.
Initially, emergency responders utilized fire trucks to access those stranded, but conditions led to difficulties that almost compromised rescue vehicles. Shortly after, Zodiac boats were deployed, and heavy farming equipment was later employed to assist individuals stuck on their roofs to safety.
By Monday evening, Manitoba’s Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced that emergency management had accounted for all residents in affected areas, with no one reported stranded.
“We believe everyone is safe,” Naylor remarked, adding that provincial emergency teams are collaborating with local officials to coordinate food, medical assistance, and other support for evacuees.
The severely impacted regions registered remarkable rainfall amounts. Environment Canada indicated that around 72 millimeters fell in a matter of hours in the Swan Valley, while Minitonas saw nearly 148 millimeters overnight, marking it as one of the hardest-hit areas.
The Municipality of Minitonas-Bowsman declared a local state of emergency as floodwaters disrupted vital services and infrastructure. Residents were instructed to stay indoors while emergency teams navigated the crisis.
Power outages led to diminished water pressure, prompting officials to issue boil water advisories. Furthermore, a ruptured gas line necessitated the evacuation of part of a neighborhood. Citizens were urged to exercise caution around flooded areas and water crossings.
Rising water levels caused closure of the Second Avenue bridge in Minitonas and submerged Knox Avenue. Manitoba Hydro crews continued their work to restore electricity, while firefighters planned door-to-door guidance on safely managing flooded electrical systems.
Flooding has also resulted in the closure of multiple highways throughout western Manitoba. The provincial 511 highway information service reported significant washouts and water-covered roads due to overflowing rivers and streams, with barricades set up where feasible, assisted by RCMP officers.
The Town of Swan River, adjacent to the affected areas, has offered support to disaster-impacted residents. Mayor Lance Jacobson expressed concern over the long-term repercussions on local agriculture, fearing the devastation of farmlands may be severe.
Jacobson warned that numerous producers may face challenges recuperating from the damage inflicted by the widespread flooding, with some regions potentially witnessing complete crop failures this year.
Alongside severe storms, strong winds and large hail touched various regions in Manitoba. Environment Canada recorded wind gusts exceeding 110 kilometers per hour in certain locales, and golf-ball-sized hail was reported within Canupawakpa Dakota Nation. Tornado warnings were also issued amidst several storms, although no confirmed tornadoes have been identified.
Meteorologists predict a brief lull in the inclement weather, yet further rainfall may be forthcoming. Environment Canada has cautioned that additional heavy rain could arrive on Tuesday, raising alarms that already soaked areas might face additional flooding.
As recovery operations proceed, provincial authorities and local leadership are emphasizing the restoration of essential services, evaluating infrastructure damage, and guiding residents back to safe conditions in their homes. The full scope of the devastation may remain unclear until the waters recede, allowing for comprehensive inspections.
